Munoz

I’ve got a mug with the cup winning team on it, I remember saying to a mate while supping a cuppa, just after we sold Eze, how long before every player in that starting line up has gone?

I think I seen somewhere that the Newcastle team that won the league cup only 1 or 2 players are left from that team. Same for villa soon and it's already happening to us.

With two new RWBs supposedly coming in for a combined £30m+, you have to say, it does look like the club are planning for Munoz to leave. He's been my favourite player since he arrived. The guy has unbelievable energy and character and was possibly the most important player under OG. If he gets the chance to move to Barcelona, which he has stated is his dream, then fair play, we should try and get that deal done as he's earned it. If it's anyone else, we should politely decline.
Me too, my favourite player for many a long year, so much so I’m tempted to have him replace Paul Hinshelwood in my all time best team, but I’m finding it hard to do, RIP Doris 🥹

If we’re signing 2 right backs in this window then he’s clearly going while we can get a decent fee.
Munoz's likely replacement was surely brought in early in this window. Mingueza is primarily a RWB. He's experienced, has played in the best league outside of the PL and has European experience as well. Cardines will be his back-up in my view.

Neither Khalaili nor Gozo are right backs. The positions they've both played are listed on Transfermarkt as "right midfield" and "right wing", whereas Munoz is listed as having played "right back", "right midfield" and "centre back". I see Khalaili as being Sarr's back-up and Gozo as a player for the future for when Sarr goes and Khalaili takes over the starting role.

Sage's intense pressing system will require us to have two no 10 options for both sides of the striker with the starting 10s likely to be subbed about the hour mark.

Just my take on things and I may well be wrong.

We're Palace, we understand players move on and if he goes to one of the big boys we'll wish him nothing the best of luck and thank him for an amazing 2 seasons. But... Everton? Everton?! I don't get these links whatsoever. Why would he go there, and why would we sell him to a rival, who aren't flush with money, when he has 2 years left on his contract?

If he's going anywhere, it'll be to a big European club - possibly Barca if they can find the money.

Exactly. Absolutely love the guy and he's a great person to have at the club. Pound for pound one of our best signings! If a big club comes in for him and offers Champions League football then I think he'd get our best wishes but until then I don't think he'll be pushing for a move... Especially to Everton!! Unless someone offers silly wages.

Yes, as soon as we signed Mingueza I thought it was likely Munoz would be leaving. It’s risky as Mingueza will need time to adjust, but I can see Munoz being the next one to go.

Granted not on transfermarket, but a lot of the internet content lists him as a wing back/winger.

e.g.

But also agree on Mingueza, even if he looks more like a CB.

Regardless it feels liek a very positive window so far.

Agreed but the fact that we brought Mingueza so early (for us) in the window had me thinking that the club were expecting Munoz to be going. It's possible Munoz and the club had had talks at some point in which the player indicated a desire to move on to a bigger club this window (and that's NOT Everton).

I heard Juventus or Milan are in for him before? Surely he goes somewhere with European footie? Especially as he is entering or has entered his 30s?

It’s always possible Munoz, might go if he had the chance of a big club, or just wanted a change . The club though have no reason or need to sell unless a massive offer was made on this thirty year old. Bringing Mingueza, in doesn’t provoke a sale, Cline, and Ward, both covered the position, both gone. Mingueza, replaces them and gives Munoz, not just a rest now and again but competition for the position, and possibly succeed him.

I think the fact they’ve signed Johnson would make you right 🤣

Certainly can see we are going for a younger squad now & about to get another RWB

It makes sense to sell Munoz at his age we can get a progit

After his injury last season took him a while to really get going & didn’t get back to 100%

Some shrewd goings on in the back room but I’m feeling like Palace are really mixing it up yet again keeping the purchase cost to a minimum for each player

Big season yet again with some really hard to predict outcomes apart from Arsenal finishing 5th that’s a given

Does Cardines going out on loan (after Imray has left and Clyne retired) make his departure less likely? I know we have brought players in but not sure a Cardines would be going out if we intend to sell Munoz?

Possibly but likewise Mingueza and the new lad (not yet announced) Khaleili both play that position.

You've just made the point I was going to. The players we are linked with might well be capable of playing right wing back, but they seem more 'wing' than 'back'. Munoz is capable of playing right back in a back four. There's no reason to think any of his purported replacements are. I mean, Munoz plays right back in a very 'pop up at centre forward' kind of way, but still.

With Munoz we could switch to a back four if appropriate, either during a game, for particular games, or permanently. We couldn't obviously do that with the others. In that sense none of them appear an appropriate replacement, even before we consider quality and battle-hardness.

Tomiyasu played right back for arsenal, but that was before his knees imploded. Even if his body meets him halfway this season and he can play regularly, he'd be asking a lot more of himself playing out wide, twisting and turning with nimble, skillful little buggers. Far better off playing in the middle where it's more about heading, blocking, and using size and aggression.

I don't see that we have another actual right back after Munoz.

I absolutely love Munoz and would be gutted if he leaves. However...

- He's 30, has 2 years left on his contract, we will never get a bigger price for him than now
- He's been angling to leave for about 18 months. I swear every international break he gives an interview and flirts with other clubs.
- Maybe Sage doesn't play with his wing backs quite so marauding.

If we get a decent fee then fine, but I think it has to be over 40m. Or if it's Forest, over 60m. And we have to actually spend some of it rather than just doing free transfers and swaps.

I think we can safely say any deals between Palace and Forest died the moment the fat man sang/cried.
