"Like a New Signing" Contenders

With so much transfer speculation and concerns over gaps in our squad, it's easy to forget that we have players that the good people of Match of the Day might refer to as 'like a new signing' if they suddenly have a good season.

Essentially, players who have played a minor part over the last season due to injury, being second choice in their position, or not suiting Glasner's system, but who might suddenly come to life under Sage, and we'll wonder how we did without them. I think there are a few contenders:

Cheick Doucouré - The obvious contender. Former player of the season, riddled with injuries, but (hopefully) looks to be in contention again after a couple of years out. It's at a time where we need more midfield depth as well, so if he could stay fit and rediscover anything like his old form, it could be absolutely huge for us. Only 26 as well so plenty of years left if (big if) he can stay injury free.

Chadi Riad - Has somehow been with us for two years now, playing just 970 minutes of football. Like Doucoure it all depends if he can shake off the injuries but, with Lacroix departing and seemingly no major CB in to replace him, Riad has a massive opportunity to establish himself. Only 23 and seems pretty decent when he does play I thought, could solve a problem for us.

Matheus Franca - Another long term resident of the hospital wing. Never thought he'd play for the club again to be honest but seems to have been one of the highlights of pre-season. 22 years old and two years left on his contract so would be amazing if Sage could turn him into an actual player, either to serve us or sell him. Absolutely worst case, cannot be worse than Brennan Johnson.

Yeremy Pino - Cheating at my own game here because he played a lot. However, I think this is the season he turns into a key player for us. A World Cup winner and I think struggled at times due to not playing wide enough to suit his natural game. Apparently Sage likes his wingers out wider than Glasner which I think is going to suit Pino brilliantly. Given that he has now had time to adapt to the physicality of the league, he's my outside tip for POTY contender.

Jørgen Strand Larsen - Bit of a weird situation when you spend nearly 50m on a striker who, 6 months later, can't get in the team ahead of a player who clearly wants to leave us. However, after an innocuous start to his time at the club, he needs a big season to justify that fee. He clearly has the ability, as 14 Premier League goals in the 2024/25 season will attest to, and should be entering his theoretical prime. If we can get him going, him and Mateta competing will be very good for us.

It be great if they could all stay fit, ie. Doucoure, Riad and Franca.

Riad - I was reading an article that stated the reason he was dropped from the Morocco team at the WC, is because his knee was reacting to that many games in a short space of time

If that is true, then it's going to difficult to play twice a week when the Europa League starts.

Doucoure - going to take some time to get anywhere near match fit, and I wonder whether he can reach previous levels again.

If he breaks down again that could be it.

Franca - despite his injury issues in the UK, I don't think he had them back in Brazil. He could be the surprise of the season.

Pino - maybe Sage will play a style more suited to him when he comes back this season

JSL - cant say I was an advocate of his signing in January, and even more so at his price tag. He needs to do alot more.

With currently eight defensive players plus Cardines, Lerma, possibly Khalaili, three Academy players and any number of players on the long list of possible buys, I don’t think any defender is going to play every match…………except Mitchell of course who would get very very annoyed if anyone took his place!

There is also Nketiah. He's yet to have much impact but is at least as likely to get goals as Larsen if given a run in the team. Like many on the original list, has to stay injury free.

For me, Nketiah would be the least surprising success of all our 'missing in (non) action' brigade.

Doucoure tops the list by a country mile. If he can get back close to fitness, he comes straight in to partner Wharton and form a formidable partnership - one of the best in the league.

Chadi Riad! Tried to reply to just him.

He was in the WC team first week, and then did a good 2nd match as well. But I guess the knee couldnt handle 3 matches in 10 days. So tried the 3 match and was substituted.

Big injury and didn't play matches. But now it's been 2 months extra getting the knee into super fit shape. So hopefully he can play now 2 matches a week.

You do know that Franca has been playing in Brazil for the past 2 years on loan & not injured.
It was one year in Brazil, he spent part of it injured, and he rarely played when he was fit.

Prior to the loan, and the reason for the loan, he struggled with a succession of injuries in Beckenham that kept him out of contention for us.

He did not enjoy his time at VdG, as loans manager Brighty has been very keen to let us know.

Since he returned to South London though he has looked like a player transformed. I will love it if that proves to be the case once the season is underway.

as has been said it was 1 year, which covered 2 seasons and he rarely played. Most of those appearances were late sub ones and his performances were generally considered underwhelming.

He also had a few injuries during the loan.

I hope he can come good, but it is difficult to use his Brazil loan as an indicator of that.

He's had a better pre-season for us so i'm hoping he can make an impact this season, if only from the bench.

Funnily enough, when I posted this, nine(9) days ago, I knew.

I posted before I think he’s grown up and realised his future for his family lies with performances and earning money. Being homesick and away from his Mrs and kids didn’t help but maybe he’s bought them over this time as the kids are older now.
Hopefully he proves the doubters wrong and I love his song as well 👍

I honestly think as much as we all want Doucoure to do well he is far from being considered to start games. I would prefer to see him loaned out till Christmas get a run of regular games and then come back fit and game ready for the second half of the season.
