Johnson, McNeil

I don't think you get the formation, we play 3CBs and 2 DMs so the both WBs attack at the same time, attacking qualities are far more important than defensive, that is the job of Riad or Takimoto. 😊
Honestly, I do understand the system.

There may be moments when Riad or Canvot, or one of the holding midfielders, covers the space behind the wingback when they go forward, but usually that is just to address a loose ball or clearance into that channel before it becomes an attack proper. Even then, the outside centre back or midfielder can only go into the wide area if they are confident they can get to the ball first.

The reason it's typically called a three centre backs and two defensive midfielders system is that, aside from taking action to prevent a counter attack as described above, none of those five players are tasked with marking the opposition winger in the way a traditional full back would be.

That is the job of the wingback, so McNeill would be expected to mark opposition wingers when we are defending, just like Mitchell does. In the vast majority of our league games we defend at least as much as we attack, so the wingback has to be up to the task. And I'm not confident that McNeill would be.

The fact that both wingbacks may have license to attack at the same time doesn't change their defensive role, nor negate the importance of being able to fulfil it.

I would have been happy with McNeil originally. I think he's a very good crosser and will create more chances.

However... £35m for him with one year left on his contract, which is effectively what we'll be paying, is a disgrace.

If we are genuinely getting no money from this, even performance related add ons or a sell on clause, it is dreadful and somebody should answer for it.

I still have hopes for Strand Larsen but, given the fee we paid for him and what he's added so far, the January window was appalling.

If this happens this is embarrassing paying 35mil for a player then doing a straight away for someone who’s probably worth half that if your lucky 6 months or so later is shocking!!

Christ. Has McNeill only got one year left?
This just gets worse.
I'll still take the deal, though.

I think I tend to agree.

You should have titled this, 'Disgusted from Whitstable'.

just an interesting fact . Dwight McNeil has 3 goals and 2 assists in 12 appearances versus Crystal Palace in the Premier League in his career. Brennan Johnson has 3 assists in 6 appearances against Crystal Palace in the Premier League in his career.
