Is it really worth sending a person to prison for 1 year if you can deport him? Most criminals are a drain on the taxpayer so this is more of a punishment as they will lose their benefits.

the punishment must be unpleasant. We cannot just provide free flights to holiday destinations* for these feckers.

I'd settle for instant deportation of those convicted of crimes less than (TBC) years.

Sounds so easy doesn’t it? So easy it ought to have been done years ago. So why hasn’t it?

Unfortunately there are inevitably claims under human right or refugee conventions that can take years to resolve and cost lots of money. We have signed those conventions and successive governments haven’t suspended them, because of the consequences of doing so.

Added to which we need the active cooperation of Embassies in issuing travel documents and accepting the return of their national. This is often not available.

So it’s often cheaper, and more secure, to keep them in prison.

Building a new standard prison in the UK typically costs between £250 million and £300 million though complex replacements for older facilities can reach up to £1 billion. Due to sharp construction inflation and supply shortages, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) currently estimates the capital cost to build a prison at £600,000 per cell (or place).

For £600,000 we could build three houses to put each person in.

If those obscene figures are accurate, it would probably be better to build a massive prison in one of our overseas territories and deposit foreign criminals there. 12% is a big chunk. You could also put illegals there too. Two birds...

I wonder how the cost of that would compare?

How about the Flannan Isles in the Outer Hebrides? 20 miles west of the Isle of Lewis. The sea around it is exceptionally rough so swimming wouldn't be advised. It rains a lot with a vicious wind chill factor and when it's not raining is very humid.
Wouldn't need a prison - just a load of tents. They wouldn't last long due to the Atlantic gales but it's a start.

Depends on what you call standard. These days that means single cell occupancy, colour TV and drone delivery service (joke).

Building prisons is so expensive because of the Uman Rights activists. I am not advocating Victorian prisons but neither do they have to be like hotel rooms. There is a compromise. Other countries manage with dormitories.

Alcatraz seemed to work well until it began to crumble. I've been there and it isn't somewhere you'd want to end up.

Our prisons are in a shocking state and are an international disgrace. We appear in a race to the bottom
to have a penal system as appalling as the Americans. It is not a standard any self respecting person would deem acceptable, regardless of the crimes committed.

It is not lefty or namby-pamby. Our wealthy northern European neighbours provide precisely what you oppose, yet have lower crime rates and recidivism.

I guess the key word is that highlighted.

So the prison system is in crisis and your biggest concern is that prisoners aren't comfy enough.

It’s only got to be spent once though.
Investment cannot always be about cost. If one cell keeps a child killer or rapist off the streets is it not worth £600,000. Personally I’d cut their throat with a butter knife but wouldn’t be allowed so this is the next best.

That's true but factor in that it costs over £1000 a week to keep someone in prison and the price per cell doubles in 10 years. Obviously it's essential to keep dangerous offenders off the streets but in other cases surely some sort of supervised community service would be a better option even if it was on a day release basis from somewhere other than a prison.

Agreed but with how the left are scaring, threatening and jailing any dissenters or hurty word writers it’s not a surprise jails are full. I do wonder how many in jail are really not a threat directly to the public. Financial crimes, internet hurty word sentences, incitement to violence type I mean. I reckoned 20% could be released without anyone in public being in danger.
