Palace Summer 2026 transfers?

Lacroix to be replaced by a predominantly RWB free transfer in Mingueza?
Wow.!
Doucoure had a 'whole season to recover' last season when he tore his meniscus and barely was barely fit enough to feature at any level?
Words fail me.
I wouldn't knock free transfers per se. Had it been John Stones many on here would have said "OK if he can keep fit". Mingueza can play CB. He did so at Barcelona, but he has predominantly been a RWB.

Another day of the window goes by - and still nothing. We have spent £0 - just bought in one free transfer.

Yet lost the mainstay of our central defence after losing Guehi - in the winter window. We are in Europa as well as the Prem and have a squad nowhere near good enough to compete in either..!!

This level of inertia is on a different level even by Parish standards in windows..!!

What the hell is going on Steve.

😡
I think we managed ok without Guehi. It's the departure of Lacroix which is the main concern.

And it depends on what you mean by ''competing ''. I don't have expectations of qualifying for Europe via our League position. I think we will be around about where we were last season. The Europa will be a challenge but I actually think we may be more successful in that than some people think. Although winning it may be a stretch !

As for '' inertia '' I think that's not the right word. We have been in the market but not agreed a fee for at least one player. So there is stuff happening. But as we both know, getting deals done is where Parish / Palace frustrate us most.

I don't think anybody on here should be looking at Mingueza as anything other than a potentially useful squad player. Not a Lacroix replacement.

I wasn't intending that. For me, Mingueza gives us useful options both across the back line and as a wingback on either flank. In other words he strengthens the squad depth but I agree he's no Lacroix replacement but then no-one we buy will be. It will be a case of bringing someone in who can grow into that central defensive role that Lacroix has vacated.

Says who? He's had the whole of last season to recover, plus will have a full pre-season under his belt. And that back three is simply replacing Lacroix with a tried and tested player in Mingueza...it's not all that different really. This is Canvot's season to really step up. We could have another $52M player by this time next year.
words fail me.

I clearly hope Doucoure may get back to his old self and Canvot can continue his development but Mingueza is 100% not a Lacroix replacement. He is predominantly as RB who can play LB and maybe on the left or right side of a back 3.
I suspect similar to Joel Ward.

I admire you positivity though.

I'm not knocking free transfers per se; Kamada was one.
I was rejecting the suggestion that Mingueza would replace Lacroix to allow for a seamless transition in our back 3 which is the point the poster was making.
I am all in favour of a bit of positivity as long as there is a semblance of reality behind it

After very little news for a while, we woke up this morning to a plethora of new rumours:

Gozo from the MLS (RWB/RW)
Andre from Brazil (CM)
El Khannous from Germany (AM/LW)
Mendy from France (CB)
Louza from Watford (CM)
Njie from Italy (LW)

We were strong linked with El Khannous before he joined Stuttgart, and we do like the waiting game, so that has legs. Gozo, Andre, and Njie seem like players for development. Louza would surely only be coming with the expectation of regular football, but if the fee is reasonable could be a good addition. Mendy seems like another of the million centre-backs in France that are being linked with us. Doesn't sound like he would be an upgrade on what we have, though.

Fear it will be like last season. And we will enter the new season with a squad not strong and deep enough for all the competitions. Hope that Sage can deal with it until December or January. But then even if he is a top manager he won’t be able to avoid the slump because of injuries, a not deep enough squad, too many games and no break for Regeneration. We can then jump on him and blame him , his inflexibility, his system and even call him names when he points to the limited squad he had to enter with the season or that players sold in windows hit the strength of our squad even more. As someone said: There is no present or future-only the past happening over and over again - now.

Both Guehi and Lacroix have good recovery pace which often compensated for defensive errors eleswhere and allowed them to rescue dangerous situations.
We will miss that recovery pace and defensive awareness.
I hope that the centre back(s) we bring in also has that necessary pace and ability to sense danger.

Do you think the club would of thought of that or just looking for someone with no pace or ability?

For me the priority is at the back, and it is a serious problem as things stand. We need to use either the loan market, free agents, or spend what little we have to address this. We need at least one, probably two senior, proven central defenders who are battle-hardened and ready. They don't have to be world-beaters.

We simply cannot go into the season with a back three of Canvot, Riad, and Richards. Though Canvot and Riad both showed some promise and we probably all expect big things of the former, neither has shown themselves able to produce over a long season in the premier league. In Riad's case, doubts remain over his fitness. Richards is good and solid, but is he good enough to play in the central/sweeper role? I have no strong reason to think so. It will be critical to have a very good player in that role to cover the inexperienced and inconsistent players we seem likely to use. Plus, what if one or two get injured? All our cover options would be round pegs in a square hole.

I would certainly take a punt on Tomiyasu, unless the medical shows a total horror show. I would also try and get Disasi, whether on loan or permanently even if the price is steep. I'd even look at the likes of Adam Webster. Perhaps we find a new Andy Linighan type, a bit like when West Ham bought Craig Dawson for about a fiver. All their fans went mad but he was brilliant for them.

We are not in a strong position to be fussy now. Not every signing will be perfect in terms of age, sell on value, status etc.

Any Delaneys or Cahills about?

I guess part of the difficulty is knowing when to show your hand.

Everyone knows that Chelsea are looking to get rid of 5 CBs (4 now TB has gone). Its a bit of a game of how much you are prepared to overpay ATM

i would put Delaney up there with Ian Wright as the best value for money signing.

He had been released by Ipswich a few days before we signed him - supposedly on his way to the airport to go back to Cork!
Great shout! Andy Johnson - part exchange £750k where we got him and £4.25m in exchange for Clinton Morrison - is always one which comes to my mind for best value for money.

If the first three through the door are Mingueza, Tomiyasu and Gozo and it's for a combined £11m, then it sounds pretty smart in fleshing out the squad in areas we were short. Especially if we can count Doucoure as effectively a new signing?

Canvot, Richards, Riad could be a starting back 3. Tomiyasu and Le Guen if it happens behind seems fine? I get it's not wildly exciting and it will need rotation given Riad's injury history but spending big doesn't mean success. You have to think that spending £25m there has to come at the expense of improving the attack which I think is a bigger concern.

It looks from the outside that this 70% squad cost rule is really going to bite us this year given the number of deals we seem to be walking away from based on price.

Biggest worries for me are JPM's 1 year deal, needing Johnson to be an effective member of the attack given we're light on numbers, and that we look much weaker if Kamada or Wharton don't play.
