Walter Benitez

Walter Benitez was not in last nights Argentina squad. He hasn’t played for the Argentina national team since 2023. Whatever happened yesterday in New Jersey was nothing to do with him.

I liked him too, but in many ways you've proved my point. He legged it as soon as he was demoted to number 2. I don't think Palace can keep two goalies happy that both see themselves as potential first choices.
I liked Sam as well, but you are right, that’s why generally a second keeper is usually a bit pants or a journeyman

The falklands was nothing to do with Clarkson, May and Hammond, but the Argies drove them out of the country 🤣

Or possibly a kid. We've had a couple of young keepers who I'd be nervous to see start every week but would presumably be happy to make the match day squad as backup.

I fear none of our young keepers would ever break the first team otherwise.

To a degree it can depend on the club as well. Keepers who would normally see themselves as a number one might be content at a large club as a number 2 where:

1. The club is regularly in 4 competitions so the volume of games gives them some match time each season.
2. The infrastructure of the club (fitness facilities; nutrition; sports science etc) is outstanding.
3. They get paid close to if not as much as they would get being a number one elsewhere.

Emi Martinez is a good example: he was number 2 at Arsenal until he was 26/27 and moved to Villa.

I am fairly sure Speroni is mentioned in the bible and anyone bad mouthing him would be smote...smited...whatever the word is where God fries you for being a pr*ck.
Difficult to believe Julian is Argentinian. A true gentleman who always played the game in the right spirit. Compare that to his cheating, fouling compatriots and particularly that rat faced creature who plays for Chelsea.

I think he is only mentioned twice:

"Even Julian Speroni could not save Sodom and Gomorrah".

"David struck Goliath with a shot so powerful, even Julian Speroni could not have stopped it".

It would be nice if the OP got their facts right re Benitez.

I can't recall a time when the Argentine football team won any plaudits for their conduct and sportsmanship. Their behaviour on Saturday was very much in keeping with their reputation.

Football can bring out the worst kind of mob mentality in people. I say that because when I worked in Buenos Aires 15 years ago, I found the people there to be warm, welcoming and without any anti British sentiment. So much so that I went there on holiday some years later, despite Mrs. Neillo's reservations about going there....ask her today and she'll tell you it was one of the best/the best holiday she's had. Mainly because of the people !

In my experience they are Speroni like not Fernandez like !

That's brilliant, I'm very impressed!! 🤣
Have chuckled at both your and PTJ's offerings. I doubt I'll be able to include them in the sermon I'm preparing for this coming Sunday, though. However, here are a dew Bible firsts you may or my not know

The first tennis match? when Moses served in the courts of Pharaoh

The first motorcycle? When David's Triumph was heard all over Israel

The first streaker? Aristarchus

I know, we're getting silly now.

I feel as though 'Julian Speroni bible references' are poised to overtake 'Chuck Norris jokes'.

the bottom line is that as a prem league club we need 2 decent goalies to cover for injuries and loss of form.
However, keeping the 2nd goalie happy is never easy. Playing in most cup matches is the obvious compromise.

Ultimately Benitez probably doubled his wage when he signed for us and at 33 he is also probably slightly passed his best. I think he needs to accept his position - the rumour of him being unhappy is possibly just lazy journalism.

He's a decent alternative but clearly not as good as Hendo.

I would love Palace to focus on one of our 2 loaned out goalies but feel maybe they are both Div 1 standard, which is not acceptable. We have that as our No3 already.
