Great question and it requires some mental gymnastics to understand.

- If Palace wins, it is all the players (with fan help of course) who made it happen. We won, everyone is happy. Woody gets ignored completely.
- If Palace loses, then it is 100% Woody's fault for being cheap and not spending his billions bringing in better players and building a better facility to set the players up for success. I get to rant about Woody being a trash owner and how him being cheap is costing the team.

So no matter what happens on the pitch, I get to be entertained either way.

Think you have the owners mixed up, Johnson has only just come on board, after buying Textors shares, it was Textor who we didn't like. Nobody, to my knowledge has ever derided Johnson if we lose a game, Steve Parish, who is the Chairman of the club, does get some grief.

I've hated Johnson since he bought the NFL NY Jets back in 2000. I don't think he will be nearly as awful with Palace as he has with the Jets because he doesn't understand the game at the same level as he thinks he knows American football so he won't be as involved and just wanted to own a Premier team.

I completely understand that this is a me thing and that 95% of other fans will simply be amused (hopefully) by the rants hating on Woody for any issue that comes up with team.

I'm mature enough to understand that for all Woody gets wrong, he knows how to run a business and having a rich owner in the premier league is pretty much the only thing keeping teams from administration. He also has access to deep pockets and that if he decides he wants to win a league championship it is drastically easier for him to do it in EFL then in the NFL. The question is whether he is willing to open it up and see what he can do with his money.

Ah, so it's you, that hates Johnson & not our fans, clearer now. Thanks for your reply. He very well have 'deep pockets' as you imply, as do our other 2 Americans who also have shares in our club, Josh Harris & David Blitzer, you may have heard of them.

In the UK & Europe, clubs, especially clubs in the top 5 European leagues are governed by financial restraints, an owner cannot go splashing the cash to get a player to join anytime he feels like it, nor pay huge wages beyond the clubs means, so, no, he won't be able to win the league just because he has a few pennies, it doesn't work like that anymore.

In layman's terms & there are different rules, but, a club can only spend 85% of what it earns in terms of recruitment & wages, infrastructure etc you can spend what uou like, we are currently about to build a new stand & the work has already started.

Thank you for the reply and the education on the fiscal aspects of it as I enjoy looking at professional sports from the realist side of the game (my hated of Woody being excluded of course). In addition to the 85% Premier limit, my understanding is that clubs playing in UEFA competitions are capped at 70%, which makes things even harder. From what I've seen, we've made some constant improvement on the economic front and the eventual new stand will likely allow the club to be a top 10 in revenue producers and hopefully it cuts back on the poaching from the wealthier clubs out there.

Harris and Blitzer are both really solid owners who understand what it takes to make a successful franchise and make them successful. I really like how aggressive they have been with some of the other teams they have bought and the progress towards making a sustainable product that is fun for the fans.

I think they initially buy into the idea that they can turn EPL clubs into financially successes like they have in major US sports and then wake up after a while to the reality that EPL is completely different and that the financial challenges don't align to the rewards in many cases.

Or it could be a case of testing the market to see what the club is currently worth and then only making the deal if it makes sense and a consortium is willing to overpay for the team because of recent successes and possible future opportunities, such as main stand improvement.

I think we would be looking at either Ares Management or Arctos Sports Partners as potential buyers if they do sell as there are only so many companies out there with the capital to buy the club and most of them happen to be American so it would likely be just trading out the people who sign the paychecks and someone local actually running the team in their absence, which tends to work best.
