Norways 2-1 win over England on Sept 9 1981 sent the Norwegian commentator completely off his trolley. It was awarded a prize for best bit of football commentary ever by the Observer.

He claimed victory by Norway over, amongst others, Lord Nelson, Winston Churchill, Lord Beaverbrook, Henry Cooper and Lady Diana.........

Something else we should have listened to was setting up an investment fund for our oil and gas like the Norwegians did about the same time.

We got beat by Switzerland as well in that qualifying, both were no where near as good as the Norway and Switzerland we know now, proper minnows back then, so you can understand the excitement 🤣
I remember going over to the old bar at selhurst where Sainsburys car park is now to watch our game against Hungary when we qualified by the skin of our teeth after missing out on the previous two world cups

Bjorge Lillelien livened up boring matches, a sort of Norwegian Eddie Waring.

“The thug Phil Neal kicks Tommy from behind! Phil ‘pig’ Neal! Start retaliating! The English have thugs both in the stands and on the pitch!”

That may well, of course, be accurate.

Fraying at the edges, extra minutes added on, 'the referee is clearly trying to qualify for English citizenship'.

We could do with him now imo.
