Ann Widdecombe

RIP

I know things like this normally go in General Talk, but, she was a 'quirky' (imo) politician. Love her or hate her(metaphorically).

She was quite admirable in her refusal to conform to anyone else's expectations despite how much mockery she received.

She was a fantastic speaker for The Right. She was a brilliant addition to all the politics of Northern Ireland. As a posh English Catholic, she made it difficult for Ulster Unionists to look upon all Catholics as violent drunks who tarmac driveways*.

She was also a great bulwark against the Welfare-State replacing fathers in the lives of their own kids.

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Ann Widdecombe.
She was a formidable politician infused with intelligence, wisdom, honesty, integrity and fortitude.
My deepest condolences go out to all her family and friends.
RIP

I was certainly never s fan of hers. I found her to be quite a divisive politician, however I always respect anyone who stands by what they believe, even if I disagree with them and she was certainly that.

One thing I did find disgusting was the way she was constantly ridiculed on Have I Got News for you, because of her looks and the fact that she never married. It made me realise what odious little men the co-hosts of the show are.

May she rest in peace..

She was a conundrum.at one point loved for being an eccentric old biddy on Strictly but on another a radical opponent of anything she disagreed with be it on religion ( she joined the Catholic church after falling out with changes in the C of E or politics where she moved from the Tories to Reform.

As a constituency MP she was generally well.liked but on a national stage she became further to the right as she got older.

I do not look back on her political career with any real fondness will.not particularly mourn her passing but I know others will.

I remember her being shredded by Stephen Fry on Intelligence Squared, where she defended Catholic attitudes alongside a priest whose name I cannot recall. You almost felt sympathy for her it was so overwhelming.

I was never a fan. If she possessed intelligence then I am so glad I don’t have any.

She wasn’t just not of her time. She wasn’t part of the previous ones either.

I am sure she was a kind and nice person in her private life. Never though a 21st century politician.

Always liked her.

Talented writer as well......I'll never forget her, 'something of the night' description of Howard, which seemed to chime on the right......The left all think you're evil anyway but she had a good sense around people.

RIP.

At last! 🤣 a pretty disgraceful post given the woman has just died and now there are possibly suspicious circumstances into her death. Shredded by Stephen Fry, wrong sex wasn’t she? Personally I think Fry is an odious man, reasonably good actor but that’s as far as it goes.
