There were a lot of players older and still behind John Bostcock in the pecking order, and I'm sure it worked out better for some of them (no idea why I'm picking on JB there, he just sprung to mind)!

I'm not so sure. I think they were likely under pressure not to undermine the President.
The whole situation is a farce, blatant corruption and has caused a real mess - particularly for the US national team. The whole world wanted them to lose and it galvanised Belgium. Balogun was put in a terrible position.
