Main Stand redevelopment thread

A major contractor went into administration yesterday (Ardmore). They currently have 10 major projects on the go in London, so every main contractor will be trying to get in on these now, which might leave a lack of capacity for any new and upcoming developments.

It'll also trickle down to subcontractors and suppliers, many of whom may go also.

SP has another 'get out of jail free card' to delay the new stand, after getting shot of Bovis.

Presumably there will be Performance Bonds in place for these projects

The London annual construction turnover is estimated at 40 ish billion, Ardmore turnover was 350 million so it's really a drop in the ocean

Last time I was in that Sainsbury's it felt like the Third World. How many people who go to games shop in there?
Not sure when you last went but I've gone there for years and I certainly wouldn't call it that.

It's well-stocked, convenient, clean, prices are fair enough really, and there isn't much close by by-way of competition.

I do prefer Aldi but only for value.

The idea that SP is "keeping quiet about issues for PR reasons" is weird, only because he didn't keep quiet in the first place.

You're either cautious about comms or you're not. At the start of the last season we were told by the club that construction "had already begun".

There's been no visible sign of any construction going on, nor any word to counter the initial statement.

So why were we told in the first place?

Yeah, agreed, that's the striking thing, isn't it?

It's a complex project with many different aspects, conceived against a deeply erratic economic backdrop. I don't have any problem with the stand stalling or even going into deep freeze if the wider conditions make it too risky, but expectations have been raised by previous announcements.

Also, another issue highlighted by the stand delays is what are the Americans are here for if not this type of thing?

Expenditure on infrastructure isn't subject to FFP, the Americans could pay for the stand out of their own pockets if they wanted and it'd be done by now. I don't expect them to do that from some deep love of the club, but if it was a sensible, practical investment in the asset they own then I would kind of expect them to bite that bullet. They haven't. That (firstly) suggests they don't see it as a safe bet and (secondly) begs the question, why are they here? They can't spend money on players and aren't spending it on other projects. Unless of course they are, and I'm doing them a disservice!

Textor funded the work done at Beckenham, and I'm pretty sure Johnson did put up money for the new stand.

The issues don't have to be purely financial. Point is we don't know anything, other than clearly that we were told an untruth a year ago.

A lot of construction projects in Croydon have similarly failed to reflect the promises and statements made. Is that an issue with the council or something else, I don't know, but I'm sure many here can say the same I've watched it happen continuously all of my life.

There was a press release about how palace had taken out a loan from such and such a financing company for the stand I thought?

Possibly. I don't remember that one honestly. I'd be interested to know if any of the announcements are still up on the website. I'm too lazy to scroll back through a year's worth of posts though ngl 😂

From information published the Club started building the Academy in 2014 with most of the major work continuing until 2019 when it opened. I see a number of claims that Textor paid for the Academy but he only came on the scene as a Director in August 2021 having loaned Palace some money for players before that. Academy opened in October 2019 and it more likely that the £45+5 million received from ManU for Aaron Wan Bissaka in June 2019 help pay for the development.

Johnson took over Textor’s shares and his team has advised Palace to change the structure of the new stand from concrete to steel with resulting large savings. The Club sacked constructors Ardmore some months ago prior to it entering administration. The reason, not surprisingly, lack of progress. It could take up to a year for a new construction company to be appointed.

In the meantime, we struggle to cope with the demand for tickets by those who wish to be regular fans, bring their families and friends and develop a continuing fan base.

It does feel relevant to the apparent delays that large contractors have been going bust. I understand a good few smaller firms were being dragged under by price rises, after having signed up to deliver fixed price jobs. Not sure if the bigger boys are effectively in the same boat, but if so then I'd think the club don't want to be like one of those homeowners who have handed over their life savings just to see the builder go bust.

The Croydon issues was due to incompetent council, am sure there was no corruption and connected parties did not get any bungs
