With a record number of our (current) players representing their countries in the World Cup I reckon we'll be keeping an eye on quite a few matches during the summer. I know there's a thread for yesterday's England game with NZ and what a bore that was, but this thread is for anybody to comment on any match, player or controversial incidents during the tournament.

Apart from our own players I, for one, will also be watching out for Olise playing for France and it'll be interesting to see if he gets an opportunity to play alongside JP.

Anyway, over to you.

I'll be following Spain as I got them in the pub draw. Maybe 2-300 on the line there. No doubt, I'll put myself through the lack lustre England performances. I'll probably watch if our players play for France. Which will mean I'll see Olise. But all that does is annoy me really.

I'm not going to watch a single game, not even the final if England were in it (they won't be). If we go on to win it (we won't) I won't even join in with singing vindaloo or taking my top off.

So the internet this morning is in uproar because a Somalian referee destined for the world cup has been denied entry to the US.
Now, I have a few questions here. Why is a referee who has spent his career in the "Somali First Division" presiding over World Cup matches? Granted, I haven't been to a game there but I would be shocked if it's any more proficient than a Sunday League game in the UK.
Second of all, why did FIFA send a Somalian to the US when there is a travel ban on Somalis there at the moment?
This all sounds really dodgy to me.

What national anthems of other countries do people on HOL begrudgingly like?
Flower of Scotland & also deutschland uber alles , I must confess to.

As often said, I wish theyd ditch ' god save ' and use land of hope etc or something else.
(god save is only redeemed by a rousing 'no surrender' added in & its too short)
Feel even less connected to it now its old sausage fingers.

Spain's is the easiest to learn

Apparently he was African referee of the year, although I’m not suggesting that makes him any good!
FIFA is just UEFA but bigger and more corrupt. It will have been to meet their EDI targets.

Yes well after the debacle that was the AFCON last year I'm not surprised that somebody from an amateurs league could be the best they have.
Nevertheless, he is still an amateur so shouldn't be officiating in the world cup anyway. Another massive fluff by FIFA.

You little ray of sunshine you 🤣

But seriously I do sort of get it, since our recent promotion to the premier league I struggle with England a bit. Palace lock horns with these players week in week out and a lot of them I really don’t like.
For example Harry Kane scoring for spurs right in front of us in the Whitehorse and running along In front of us with that smug grin on his face to celebrate with the spurs fans, then the very next week he’s scoring for England and I’m getting all excited about it
Also when Deli Ali nearly broke Yohan’s ankle at selhurst and stood over him smiling, literally the next week he’s playing for England and I’m shouting “go on deli” I made myself want to throw up 🤨
Pickford giving it the biggun in front of us like the smug t*** that he is!!
There’s many more examples, but I’m boring myself now🤣

I just find it hard to separate the two now, which is a shame, because back in the 70’s,80’s and 90’s I used to love following the national team

I would take one Palace FA Cup (and now have) over 100 England World Cups. For me domestic football (both Palace and my non-league side) is a country mile away from international football.

We all know England are utterly boring to watch, but I also hate the support. Having seen the atmosphere Palace fans can drum up (not always, but often) I absolutely detest how dull the international support is. I often joke that the FA should hire the Palace fanbase to coordinate their live support. Incredibly biased I'm sure, but I'm on a Palace forum...

Can’t say I disagree, although the England away support is usually excellent. As is with club support, the away fans are always more vocal and supportive despite what’s going on on the pitch
