Mateta to AC Milan?

Interesting that Milan missed out on the champions league on the last day of the season and they will now play Europa League next year!

Given that he got his call up to the France squad AND won a European trophy with Palace, do you think Mateta may now stay?

He'll be 29 next month and wants to play Champions League football. If a decent CL club comes in for him I think he may go. I doubt he'll move before the world cup is over, though. There is also the question of what our new manager will want from his striker. Hopefully, he'll want a big bullying target man and can persuade JPM to stay.

let's be realistic, he may get a shot at the euro's 2028, but that's it... and he needs to be playing to his potential.. I believe that's with palace..

Europa next season is a great window for him and a 2 year extension means he can be sold next summer if a champs league comes a knocking...

Some of it will depend on what JPM wants. If he wants to move on and massively increase his wages then he will go. We would rather get some money for a player in the last year of his contract than let him go for free.

I think he stays. AC Milan are in Europa League. Same as Palace.

He's the main man here, scoring goals, starting all the big games and getting selected to play for France. He seems happy (the bloke is bonkers) and the fans have forgiven him. We need to get the new manager over the line asap and to sit him down. The grass is already green at Selhurst Park.

Milan are a bigger club of course, but play in a lesser league and I doubt they can match the money we can offer him.

At his age, I can't see a 'big' Champions League club coming in for him.

New two year contract to be signed. Assess in a years time. The European money helps.

What has happened to Italian football, the national team can't qualify for anything these days

So Ive rocked up at SE25 and offered you a straight £30m for Mateta. No add ons or other caveats. You interested. It’s a tricky one.

Heart says no, but head says yes.

If we dont sell him this window, he'll be 30 next summer with only a year on his contract and practically worthless.

If we want to keep moving forward we need to ensure we are maximising the opportunities to turn a profit on players.

Another reason he wanted to leave was he felt disrespected by the clubs contract offers.

He will have only 1 year left so he has to be sold unless the club offer him a proper fair contract he agrees with.

It's not Palace's decision. It's Mateta's. If he won't sign a new contract then he simply must be sold, even if he's by far our best striker (he is). We've been through all this with Guehi.

Us being in the Europa League may tilt him towards signing a new deal, but only a bit. For one thing, any new club he would sign for would probably be involved in at least that level of competition, if not the Champions League. It's not like we are his only shot at Europe.

Plus, we are in Europe until we are not. Christmas time? February? Perhaps we will win the Europa League, or get back into it by winning the FA Cup again, or qualify through the league. Its possible, anything can happen. Not very likely, though, is it? In fact, so far these things tend to happen once a century or so. Compare that to the chances of Milan (or whoever else is interested in him) being in Europe every year. I know which one I'd bet on.

More than that, he is nearly 29. It's now or never to get to the big time. He's put the work in at Palace, could scarcely have achieved more for us, and has earned his shot. I'm sure he loves playing at Selhurst, but we are talking about wearing the red and black of Milan, playing at San Siro... To get to the end of the road in a few years time and have not experienced that when you could have done....

If PSG or Arsenal or someone want him, he should think twice. They will stick him on the bench, he will lose confidence, rhythm, form, fitness, and his place with France. But that's the attraction of a Milan, I should think. He gets all the glamour and prestige, regular European football, a decent wage, but they are not so rich that they can buy Mateta and add him to the pile. He'll have a good chance to be No1 there.

I just can't see what we can offer him that he can't get, plus more, somewhere else. He's already told the club in good time that he doesn't intend to renew, so for him to stay would not only require the balance to tilt in our favour when he weighs his options, it would require him to reverse a decision he has already made. I just can't see it.

Stick a nice new five year contract on the table with a fair rise, and nice Europa winners bonus attached. Guarantee him "outfield captaincy".

Get the new manager to take him out for a slap-up michelin star meal. Talk up the prospect of becoming the kind of name that will be folklore for time immemorial on South London, not just another name on the list in Milan.

Is Milan's trajectory facing upwards or downwards? How about our own?
