The only glimmer of hope, as we keep saying, is that the sort of movement and positioning you describe is being imposed on Johnson by the manager's very well-drilled system, and that it doesn't suit Johnson at all. Perhaps if he's allowed to play right wing and do whatever comes naturally to him, he'll pick up.

That said, whatever system and position a player is asked to play, surely to Christ he has to do better than this?!

Very true, and all the media praise for Brighton in particular (though perhaps for Bournemouth and Brentford too) does tend overlook how many punts they take on the next bargain that don't actually work out. They all add up.

I suppose the club can't really win. If they reinvest the Olise/Eze/Guehi monies in young hopefuls then the board lacks ambition, are tight, etc. Certainly, if those hopefuls don't quite make it and the team declines, the cause will be considered obvious and frustrating: We should have spent what we had on proven players.

Yet, when they try to replace outgoing senior men with proven premier league players, they have to pay the market rate and may get their fingers burnt. Perhaps after Sakho, Benteke, Nketiah, Johnson, Larsen etc we should probably invest in some oven gloves.

I think in this case they were trying to maintain the momentum the team had built up since Glasner came on board with a couple of 'proven' replacements, rather than starting a new cycle with youth and potential. Big signings might also be a demonstration to our own senior players that Palace are not simply a selling club, and that they need not worry they are in the wrong place for them.

(We are, it turns out, also a slightly daft buying club as well as a selling club, but still).
 
probably flog him to one of the newly promoted teams next season. We'll make a loss, but if it bolstered our attacking depth and we win the conf league then you could argue that it was worth the investment. Can't imagine that a new manager would want to keep him

Absolutely. There isn't a silver bullet.

Despite a little run of success (Eze, Olise, Wharton) there isn't a single method.

There will be some that we buy young, that will take a while to acclimatise but have huge potential (Lacroix, Eze, Olise, Canvot, Riad).

Some that are sensible, but aren't world beaters or likely to become (Richards, Hughes, Lerma)

Some that might not be be 100% required/perfectly fit the set up, but the stars align and are available, willing and at a resonable price (Hendo, Nketiah, Johnson).

Some that are critical to the way we pay so need to stump up and overpay if thats whats required - In theory JP was off and we needed a big CF who can score and knows the league and doesn't require much settling time (Larsson).

Its easy to point to the bad ones. But we need to remember that in terms of squad quality we are lightyears ahead of where were were a few years ago. We'll have 10-15 players at the World Cup this year (plus Guehi and Olise who I kind still count). If that isn't progress i dont know what is.
 
Think BJ must be the worst player in a Palace shirt since we entered PL. See no hope for him next season, Johnson and Nketiah are two players that should be shuffled out during the summer.

So you right a player who scored 17 goals in cup and league last season 11 in league as a right off narrow vision my friend
