The championship cold-war thriller comes to its climax:-

What will happen?

No denial from Soton, it looks clear they broke the rule preventing clubs from spying on training sessions within 72 hours of a game.

If so, what punishment?

Either way there are going to be a lot of disappointed people later today or tomorrow.

And this is going to stick to Southampton.

My guess is they will try and mitigate their guilt by throwing the peeper under the bus. "He over stepped the mark, we never actually told him to do it...."

To be fair I think all clubs try and get info on their opponents and legally he did nothing wrong. Their training ground can be observed from the adjacent gold course.

I'm going for a fine.

'EFL Regulation 127, which prohibits any club from observing, or attempting to observe, another club's training session within 72 hours of a scheduled match between the two clubs'.

Typically, Boro will not be able to appeal, only Saints and the EFL itself can.

The figure behind the tree with the binoculars looks very like Michael Caine.

Not a lot of people know this.

😎

Southampton set to appeal. Time is against them

Unless they can find some fat brown envelopes

I am not condoning what Southampton have done. However, doesn’t it show that UEFA and the FA have no problem sanctioning clubs of our size, while larger clubs which break the rules, like City, are never brought to book.

I find it highly unlikely that Southampton’s owners would have known about this or sanctioned it. The penalty therefore seems disproportionately harsh.

Best dock them points if they make it to the Prem and dismiss the staff engaged in the activity and any others who knew about it. If that includes the manager so be it.

The players are already threatening to sue the club for loss of earnings if the ban is upheld which could lead to a prolonged legal wrangle.

more crazy nonsense ,normal overreaction from people who can wave the big stick just because they can .a fine would be enough punishment
I would agree if it was a regular season game, however it can be argued that the consequences of spying on Boro, cost Boro a place in the playoff finals and not punishing Soton would inadvertently punish Boro.

Best course of action would have been to fine Soton, issue them with a small points deduction next season and replay the tie, although there probably isn't time to do that to fit in the schedule before the world cup

Banish them to league one .
The cheats admitted it wasn’t a one off as well .
Wrexham should be playing Middlesboro for a place in the final otherwise Boro have had a bye to Wembley .

It must stand if the problem is to be sorted, otherwise it will just continue and become normal, fines are hardly a deterrent.

Saints gained a playing advantage over the teams they spied on by cheating, breaking the rules.

Cannot understand Saints to take such crazy risks, multiple times..

But they did, so be it on their own heads.

Or, in other words, a buy, bye. If Boro win and get into the PL it would be worth around £200m to them.

I thought they looked a better outfit than Soton and will be rooting for them to beat Hull. There'll be a lot of needle at Wembley though. Should be an interesting watch.
