Manchester City vs. Crystal Palace match thread

I can't believe most of the Palace players aren't between 50 to 100 grand a week and can barely string two passes together.
Richards and Johnson in particular were absolutely terrible.
I thought Warton at least tried to play some passes over the top to Strand-Larsen who was useless, can't even trap a ball.
48 million for him and 35 million for Johnson. I think we have been done up like a kipper with them two.
Simon Jordan labelled JSL a "Donkey".
Johnson's last PL goal was back in August.

Agree with this. felt like a game we didn't care about, protect players and start prepping players fitness for the Final.

I had thought that maybe, we'd have a go at winning this one.. firstly for confidence, but also as we seem to have an interest in Arsenal winning, due to the Eze clause....
Almost put a cheeky 20/1 bet on nicking it.. but held off til the team news came out. As soon as I saw Hughes and Lerma, I knew that wasn't gonna happen, so I relegated my bet to a 'hold on for a 0-0'!

Interested to find out how OG will play the arsenal game..may want to play a full strength team to prep them for the wednesday, but with the sh*thouse tactics arsenal have reverted to recently, the last thing we want is injuries.
I think he will play exactly the same 11 against Arsenal, injuries permitting, no complaining then about rotation.

Bit unfair on Kippers

An expected result. We are a poor side, time to face reality. Squeak through in Europe after a couple of decent performances, but the league? Extremely poor indeed, 15th or even 16th place finish a possibility. That's going backwards big time and a total failure to build on the success of last season.
One can but hope that whoever is the manager next season will have the ability to make a set of disparate players click and perform to a level lacking this season, otherwise it's going to be a long, hard, relegation battling season.
Tottenham (when they were good), Aston Villa and Leicester have all failed to reach the Conference League final in the past, so getting through is a great achievement, even though listening to some pundits/fans you would think it's just a given for English teams.

The reality we face is that we've won two trophies in the last two seasons, and have a great chance to pick up a third. If we win that, it is rumoured that one of the most highly rated PL managers will come to us. We have also secured PL status for another year without any jeopardy. That makes it 13 consecutive seasons.

For a team that normally only wins play off final trophies that's definitely progress. I would not trade such a position to occasionally finish 7th in the league.

All I can remember is that they're was a big to-do once when Mick McCarthy, faced with an away game he didn't think his team could win followed very soon afterwards but a home game he thought perhaps they could, rested too many players in the former for the liking of the premier league. Might have been when he was managing Sunderland, or maybe wolves.

Beyond that I offer nothing, but trust I have been of some limited service.
The rules changed when they brought in the 25 man squad. Clubs can use any members of the 25 man squad (provided one ofcthem id a genuine goalkeeper) so we could have put out a complete 2nd XI had we wanted to, although we don't have enough CBs for that.

That was a waste of 2 hours. Terrible.
I agree with your concise assessment of last night. We clearly do not have a squad of EPL standard players who can slot in at this level if key players are rested or bench players who can come on and change a game plan. Last night highlighted where we are as a team, we can’t pass the ball well enough, we spend far too much time passing across the line or backwards, often getting in to trouble doing so, we a far too slow in transition, we lack any real threat in the final third and we struggle with high balls in to our box. As things stand, we look dead certs to struggle next year unless some miracles happen during the summer.

Agree entirely. I suppose we'd have finished higher had we not had the sublime (as if) European distraction. Objectively, we are still behind Fulham and Brighton, Bournemouth and Brentford are well ahead of us.
None of those teams have ever won any silverware and have played significantly less games than us this season. Nobody remembers where you finish in the league, as long as you aren't relegated.

Agreed. If we could trade places with one of those teams but have no FA Cup, no Community Shield and no European final, who would take that deal?!

It is, OG is leaving!

agree sadly, though judging by the insane spending in Jan our owners will fork out for the players we need, probably being massively overcharged twenty seconds before the transfer deadline.

Agree,

We need to take league position with a pinch of salt. European football was always going to stretch the squad. But how much, its impossible to say. Another 10 league points?

Clearly we dont know. But results after Europe havent been great, 1st team were rested etc. General fatigue. I can think of quite a few games that we would have won with our best 11/not being knackered.

Either way we have 1 win to get into Europe next season!

This is all very true. Will happily state this season has been a dissapointing, frustrating and boring experience as a Palace fan for the most part, however I say that without any resentment.

Should we land a European trophy at the end of it, having secured PL survival for next season, none of the aforementioned would matter one jot.

Tongue in cheek, but anybody notice that Spur's really poor form, which started after they beat us at Selhurst, began when they sold Johnson. He must have been the glue that held the team together 🤔

Oh for a perform or return clause. He can go back and help them if he likes.
