It doesn’t work that way. It’s not flexible, it’s not like “oh we don’t need him to stay to the end so he can just go back”, he has to stay with them until the expiration date.

Actually it is perfectly normal not to have a recall clause. If you want a recall clause included, you have to negotiate that when negotiating the loan.
Hopefully Cov saw enough in him and fancy keeping him for next season.

It's pretty standard to have a no fee recall clause but that has to be used during transfer windows. Other than that, there can be reasons to terminate the loan. Usually when set criteria aren't met (appearances, role etc) or when the player is unhappy, or a squad emergency. However, in those cases, it can lead to fees for breach of contract. But nobody usually takes loan litigation very far. We had problems a couple of times. Look no further than Uche this season.

I saw Esse play for Millwall and I never concluded that he was a promising young player.
The same applies to Plange when I saw him 'Plough his furrow' for Derby.

Plus a healthy % of any future sales plus a buy back clause. But agree with you. Flashes of class but probably needs a team who will play him most weeks so he can develop.

Certainly wouldn't call it a terrible signing. Yes it's not worked out but the fee is relatively small these days and if more than 50% is recouped then I'm fine with taking these types of risks and actual wish we'd do a lot more. Realistically for every 5 of these types of signings you only need 2 or 3 to work out. It's what Bournemouth, Brighton and Brentford currently do much better than us.
Sorloth was similar despite a horrific start, because time was on our side we still managed to get a fee back. It's why I can't understand when every now and then we decide to spend 30m plus on a player who has already gone through their 'youthful prospect' phase and therefore very unlikely to increase in value... And hence when it doesn't work out we're left with a player that adds little to the club but it's costing a fortune.
Esse is a counter point to the ‘why don’t we just buy another Olise from the Championship’ approach. While we’ve done very well buying lower down they won’t all work out. Esse’s first touch for us was good and it’s been largely downhill from there. At no point has he looked anything like ready to be playing in our first team squad and he managed to throughly annoy the previous manager. As you say though at least he didn’t cost £30m
