Fiorintina vs Crystal Palace match thread

Fair point Teddy, we were made to work a bit for it in the end and that will probably be more beneficial in the semi’s. Although playing at home second in the semi, I doubt we’ll have a similar scenario, more like we’ll be the ones chasing the game
Our amazingly succesful home record in last many months is a concern

our team improved dramatically when Yellow Willo came on for Pino.

but can i remind everybody that we lost the match last night. So, its not all rosy in the garden.

But we won the tie? Had it been a one legged tie the result would have been different. We were managing the game in a way that meant we needed to not concede as oppose playing a game to score more. I think to lament a loss on the night is a pointless task, we played the aggregate score and that was the right thing to do. Great, experienced management from Glasner who clearly understands what it takes to win a European competition.

Agreed. Can't read much into losing on the night, we had no incentive to chase the game despite being 2-1 down. The incentive was to see the game out 4-2 up overall, which we did.

It's a 2 legged match and we definitely managed the middle of the second half onwards yesterday

That's like saying Roy McIlroy bogeyed the last hole at the Masters, which he did, so his victory is tainted.

The tie was won after the 1st leg, the 2nd was all about not throwing it away.

I've noticed he's much more up for a scrap recently and that is just where his game has needed to improve.

I happen to have faith that once he is fully acclimatised to the physical rigours of Premier football, he'll be a very good player for us.

Probably a minority view, I know.
I think the big difference now is that he has cut out a lot of the stupid tricks and flicks. If he can become a bit more physical in his general play then I believe he will be a good player for us.
There are not many players that come into the Premier League and hit the ground running, and most take a season to adapt. Hopefully he will be a second season sensation.

I believe the main reason for losing last night was down to the injuries, especially to Max. We had a make shift defence and played the back 3 out of position once he went off. If Max stays on I think it is unlikely their second goal goes in. (We will never know though)

Hmmm, back 3 out of position. Canvot is a right sided CB, Richards is a CD & Riad is a left sided CB(who was bought in to replace Guehi initially), so no, they were not 'out of position'.

I am wondering Palace are still considered favourites to win this competition. Of course, they have a good chance to do so, but nothing more. I'd guess that Shakhtar Donetsk are just about the same strength, and Racing Strassbourg are slightly stronger.

Pino is such a gifted player technically, no doubt he'll become a key player the more he gets used to the PL. However, it is still far too easy for opponents to provoke fouls committed by him in dangerous areas. If a player with the ball turns and runs away from him, you can almost be sure what the outcome will be.

Bookies think so we are clear favourites

Because our team is likely worth 5-10 times our opponents. IF we click, we are lightyears ahead.

Got home late last night after a memorable trip to Florence.

At 1-0 on the night, Palace were in control of the game and could have gone further ahead.

I haven't seen a replay, but the penalty seemed somewhat soft, and then the injuries to Wharton and Lacroix meant an unfamiliar back three that took a while to settle down. Also having to manage Mateta's time of course. JP was causing their defence problems which sadly JSL was unable to do.

At 1-2 things could have taken a major turn for the worse but I thought the team managed the latter stages of the game well.

A few on here expressing disappointment with the result on the night, but the bigger picture was that Palace were at one point 4-0 up. That may have resulted in a slight lack of intensity but I think the enforced changes were the main factor in Fiorentina pulling it back to 2-4.

We might have paid more for our players, but whether some of them are worth that is another matter. We’ve only been favourites from the off because of our premier league spending power. I doubt any other team in this competition could spend £85 million on two players as we did, but I doubt Shakhtar will be looking at JSL and Brennan Johnson and thinking, I wish they were in our team🤣

I am 'Plugged-in' to these sentiments.

Agreed, we would struggle without them.

A Wharton groin injury is never good, although both looked in good spirits on the bench at the end so hopefully we'll get away with it.
And he is currently walking around the big card show at the XL in London rather than being on the treatment couch, as I am reliably informed by a friend, who had a chat with him.
