Fiorintina vs Crystal Palace match thread

Was nothing more than I expected couple of wobbles but happy we are through , I thought the ref done well overall , yes couple of bad advantages when we would be happy to have the foul , but did take to much crap

This might be so, however having witnessed Fiorentina over the two legs I have been far from impressed with them. To lose to them after taking the lead is disappointing.
A 'Bitter sweet' night for me.
We're we linked with that Manor Solomon or whatever his name is at some stage? Kind of one of their players that stood out as quite good. Had a feeling he was Spurs or something. Or was that the same guy?

Yes your right loaned to Leeds then tonight's opposition spurs need him more than us lol

I’m sorry, but I hope we never experience a more disappointing evening than tonight. We’ve reached the semi-finals of a European competition tonight, which is no mean feat for many clubs of our size.

I would have liked to have won both games too, but we got through the tie with no unnecessary yellow cards and a couple of (hopefully) minor injuries. A professional performance in which Fiorentina showed nothing to really threaten a turnaround.

On to the semi finals we go!

Wharton was holding his groin which is never a positive sign.
If Wharton and Lacroix are both missing for the W.Ham game, the 'Hammers' will emerge victorious.

Agreed, we would struggle without them.

A Wharton groin injury is never good, although both looked in good spirits on the bench at the end so hopefully we'll get away with it.

Not a great second half, but apart from their 2nd goal they didn’t offer too much of a threat. We were seriously weakened by the loss of Adam and Max. I think we would have at least got a draw out of the game had they not gone off.
Hopefully the injuries are not as bad as they looked as we looked dodgy at the back without Max and then playing the back 3 out of position.
Well done boys job done.

From Glasner post match as reported on BBC live text

On injuries to Adam Wharton and Maxence Lacroix: "Adam is an abductor [injury], like when he had to leave the England camp. Let's see, it doesn't look so serious but we have to assess him further. Maxence was foot to foot contact and then he felt his knee, the medial ligament so let's see but it is painful. Unfortunately we play in four days again but credit to the players that came in. Today we are celebrating going to the semi-finals, it is a massive achievement for the players and for Crystal Palace and we are enjoying tonight."

Damn. Hopefully they'll both be back soon. 2 key players.

A question from someone who couldn't watch the game. When Lacroix left and Riad came in, did Mitchell remain at wingback? Mitchell has improved in attack, but when protecting a lead in a critical match I would want Mitchell in our last line of defense.

not the optimal way to go through, but go through we did, so definitely something to celebrate and build upon. Now, going forward, this is the time for the team to "Play without Fear" ..... because that is when we are at our best!

We stayed with a back three of Chris Richards in the middle, and Chadi Riyad / JD on either side - Mitchell stayed back a bit more when Danny Munoz pushed forward.

Indeed but this was expected after winning the first leg 3-0.
From my perspective it was disappointing to lose to a somewhat limited Fiorentina team particularly after taking the lead.
Injuries to key players Wharton and Lacroix are a concern.
Jolly well done for reaching the Semi-Final but Shakhtar Donetsk will prove far more challenging opposition than Fiorentina.

That's what happens in knock-out competitions.

I concluded that the only 'Positive' from tonight's game was that we are through to the Semi-Final.
A defeat, injuries to key players and an uninspiring performance.
The performance was immaterial, it was all about getting to the semi final, which was achieved with ease. Against an in form Italian side away from home, you could only of dreamed of that a few years ago.
The emergence of a young 19 year old talent in Canvot was more than positive.

What a great photo that is on the homepage, of our fans in the corner of the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

Like a lot of people my age, I remember when the Italian Serie A was the best in the world. When Channel 4 blagged the coverage rights in the 90s, it was like a window to a different world. The clubs, kits, names, places, and stadiums just seemed so elegant and exotic back then.

I know Italian football has fallen from grace, few more so that Fiorentina. I also appreciate that they are renovating the stadium and so one end is a building site. In fact, a friend who went there a few years ago said it, like a lot of Italian stadiums, is actually a bit of a dump by modern standards. Even so, to me it is a place and an image to conjure with. The purple kits, the tower, the open curves behind the goals that Batistuta used to score in.... To see Palace play there, to see our fans flags and scarves in that same place... It finally felt like a proper reward for getting into Europe.

All true and the players didn't look out of place.
Whatever the feelings are about OG he's done great things for us and hopefully laid the foundations for the next manager to build on.

Imagine being 19, in one of the most important games in your club's history, under pressure to defend a lead, and then running two-thirds of the pitch to play a key role in opening the scoring. Not many centre-backs would do that. What a dramatic climb from the lad who made that mistake against Larnaca back in October. And that penalty was soft as a trifle.

A difficult second half to manage, but the players kept their heads and made it over the line.
