Matt, I missed the older threads on this, but what is your proposal in preference to governments ? The alternative is surely anarchy ? For what it's worth, whilst most of my views are right of centre, I was and still am supportive of most of the government's actions to combat Covid. In certain more extreme circumstances a level of conformity is required from citizens, even in a liberal democracy.
I also do not agree with the view that generally our government is not interested in making people's lives better. It's a complex question, but individually most MP's, however misguided I might find their views and methods, are in it to create a better country and to improve people's lives. I always find it quite a difficult argument to understand when people assert most politicians are in it for personal benefit. Most, especially if competent enough to be an MP, could earn more money elsewhere without the aggravation and constant scrutiny of public life, so how are they serving themselves ?
But the most important thing is that people with differing views can have a dialogue rather than a shouting match.
