We stutter through over 2 legs v Larnaca and most other games we’ve been pretty average (and that’s being kind) yet still remain favourites I’ve gambled for over 50 years and it’s badfing this old guy

Agreed. I have yet to see us have a good game in Europe so why this makes us a favourite I have no idea.

I don't expect to get through the next round.

I'd like to say first of all that I've been very critical of us this season and of Glasner, it's been one of the worst seasons for a while as far as I'm concerned.

However, I think that thus far we have played teams far below the pedigree we are used to in the PL and the likes of Larnaca have essentially just provided us with numerous FA Cup 3rd round David vs Goliath matches (we did lost the actual one vs Maccs. and to Larnaca at home). These games are not easy at all and when you have a number of them, odds are a few will throw up unexpected results.

I think the reason we remain favourites is that despite it being ugly, hugely frustrating, unconvincing etc we were always likely to progress through and as the quality of opponents increases in the KO fixtures, and we play over two legs, we are backed to have slightly more (quality) than those we'll be coming up against.

I'd suggest that's why, not saying I am correct.

The only team we were allowed to play our football against were Strasbourg and that was a solid display that we were unlucky to win, and frankly the only time it really felt like we were playing "European Football".

The other games have just been aggravating tests of our endurance and willpower, most teams would struggle against those aggravating low blocks.

It sure I agree with your final sentence. I could see Man City or Liverpool putting 6 or 7 past Larnaca. Bayern Munich maybe 10.

Yeah all those other years we've been in Europe have been much better. Oh, wait, hang on as minute

I think the teams we have played so far have been hugely inferior to us and used bus parking, time wasting, diving, counter punching to put up a fight. In some cases in a one off game its worked but over two legs as we proved against Larnaca it is less effective.
Another issue is the deeper we get into the competition the better the quality of opponents. We are way more dangerous against teams that come out and have a go at us.
Finally, while its reasonable and expected to be self critical no other team in this competition has shown the quality, the form or the results to (as yet) change the bookies minds. In other words, we haven't been great but nobody else has been any better.

This is why I think we remain favourites. For now.

We're very poor at breaking down teams who are playing for a draw.

We've seen it several times this season against Forest, Wolves and Leeds (with 10 men), Larnaca, Fredrikstad.

Against teams who try to beat us, we tend to play them off them park in this competition - Alkmaar, Kiev and Strasbourg. I appreciate we lost to Strasbourg but it could have been 0-4 on another day if we didn't miss so many sitters.

Now all the total dross is out, I think we'll find it a bit easier. The fact it's over two legs makes the chances of an upset less likely. I wouldn't expect Fiorentina to play for two 0-0's. I'm confident we'll reach the final.

The French 'EPL'(LFP) have granted Strasbourg request to postpone their league game away to Brest because it comes between their Conference league 1/4 final matches v Mainz. If they progress they will be allowed same again. Can't see the FA/EPL allowing us to do that.

Yeah you're right, the thrills of losing at home to Larnaca at home on a freezing cold night, going out to Macclesfield in the third round of the Cup, selling our talisman and our captain, the dull football and near two months without a win were a real joy, it's been exhilirating 🙄

It is partly - if not mainly - because the odds you see are set by 'British' bookmakers. They know that the majority of bets they take on the Conference League will be from punters based in Britain, and therefore the majority are likely to be on Crystal Palace, so they set the price accordingly as shorter than the rest and shorter than they perhaps should be.

This is also why England are invariably at shorter odds than they should reasonably be for the World Cup/Euros - most of the bets placed will be (patriotically or otherwise) on England, so bookmakers factor that in when making the market.

Yep , if everyone piles in on a 50/1 horse it becomes the 2/1 favourite , its still a 50/1 horse though 😉

Funny, No bookie anywhere has had us anything other than favourite, even before a ball has been kicked had us anything other than favourites so its got little to do with how much money is being piled on Palace. Not that many Palace fans dont know better than to bet on us winning a trophy!

True but they have to have a point of reference to begin with . With a horse it would be breeding ,trainer and stable with football its likely club value ,league status and UEFA coefficient rankings would be the considerations

The irony being that my original post was all about exactly why we are favourites to win the cup, yet you chose to highlight the caveat and moan about it.

A 'moan about everything and try to deride others because I'm unhappy with my own life and feel insignificant' guy, as demonstrated by many of your posts. Glad I don't know you.

Have they though, or is a decision still pending? Lens, which faces PSG in another league match has spoken against such postponements. You are right though, if granted, it is something that the EPL would never allow.

I'm certainly not expecting us to win it or even progress beyond Fiorentina. Not because i think that we are so bad but simply put, I expect Fiorentina to play defensively as in their recent league matches including vs Inter, which has also coincided with an upturn in form and results. Hopefully i'm wrong. Thus, I cannot see why we are bookies favourites. Strange.

Why should any league. Generally only one of the teams will have a chance to play in it again next year. You take the shilling you do the job.

I have palace at 5s , Athens is top of greek lge so really they should be fav but they lost in 2nd lge at home 2-0 , on paper we do have the better squad , but doesnt make us the better team , we get to the final well you never know
