Report says "despite the success of the show""

Well it depends on how you define success. Personally I would be surprised if the BBC cancelled a show that was successful. After all Doctor Who has been kept on long passed it's sell by date.
No my guess is that it did not generate the audience that was expected for it's budget.

Firstly, it is widely agreed amongst historians that Shakespeare was what we would call bisexual in current day parlance and his sonnets are absolutely riddled with gay innuendo and his plays contain homosexual relationships.

There was also plenty of speculation regarding Beethoven’s sexuality, most notably towards his own brother.

The idea that ‘degenerate’ (what a lovely term) behaviour is only common place in modern times, and that is because of Pride events, is as laughable as it is completely ignorant to any history.

Of course Shakespeare was a black, disabled trans-woman, English wasn't even their first language and there is overwhelming evidence that they were a practicing muslim and vegetarian who named their theatre 'The Globe' as a warning about climate change.
