Romaine Esse

On HOL not that long ago, I listed from the lower divisions players who had impressed me and Femi Azeez was included in that list.
He used to study how Michael Olise played when they were both at Reading.

I have seen him several times this season, my Millwall mates say he is their playmaker.

What I like about him is he is a winger who crosses a ball as soon as he can. Remember them? We only seem to buy wingers who prefer to cut inside and then run into traffic. (joke).

He is not another Eze or Olise (talent wise) but he does the simple things well. A poor man's Beckham if you like so yes I would be happy if he came.

Out of ten games since he joined Cov he’s played eight and been on the bench twice.

Five wins, one draw, two defeats. Usually gets taken off after an hour. Scored in his second and third games.

Usually plays RAM in a 4-2-3-1. In the one game where he played the full 90 mins he was used as LAM, in the same formation. It was a 0-0 draw with Oxford.

After getting off to a good start in a handful of games, it’s not carried on in the same momentum. He will be learning things from featuring in a well-drilled team at the top of the table under Lampard.

OG hooked the kid because he didn’t follow orders. Maybe if he was allowed to have the odd faux par he would learn. May well be on top dollar but I know apprentices better than some engineers of 20 plus years.

are you sure he's only been on the bench twice? I've seen at least 6 or 7 games of cov's since he went there and sacramento has started ahead of him in at least the last 4 of those.

Femi Azeez is certainly fleet of foot, he takes players on and gets crosses into the box.
He does have a preference for playing on the right and cutting in on to his left foot.

If memory serves, Coventry borrowed Esse when they had a bit of an injury crisis. If their usual players are back fit now then that may explain why he is getting less game time.

At the same time, if he was better than the other options they had, I'm sure they'd pick him. He can't get in but they are a good side.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the division (and in a totally different world) Adaramola is playing every week at Sheffield Wednesday, although they are terrible.

I'm not sure which situation is better.

Depends if he’s a shining star in an otherwise dull affair, or if he fits in well with the rest.

Reason enough on its own to sign him in my book! I hate the modern day trend for “inverted” wingers. Give me a Salako or Bolasi any day of the week- especially now we have JSL up front.

You are absolutely right Erith, I knew that wasn’t true either.

Esse has been in the Squad 10 times for Coventry City in their Championship games since joining them on loan in January of this year.

Of those ten games he has started five (and been subbed off in all five), he has been on the bench five times - subbed on three times and an unused sub on two occasions.

I watched the Sheffield derby in which Adaramola, technically speaking, got an assist. All he actually did was swing in a poor cross which went over to the far side of the box, where a teammate collected it and scored a decent solo goal, so don't be misled by the stat.

Otherwise, he looked like he had a bit of pace but no evidence of top-class quality. Probably better going forward than defending, and I see Wednesday have started playing him a bit higher up. Given we have been playing wingbacks for the last couple of years, which you would think would suit him, Mitchell plays constantly and also isn't great going forward, its probably telling that Adaramola still hasn't had a sniff . He is 22 now, and I saw little to suggest he would be playing for us in the future.

At the same time, fair play to him and to the loan arrangements Palace have made. He's moved up through the divisions on his loan spells as well as experiencing a stint abroad, and has now played almost 70 professional first team games. Even if he never makes it at Palace, he has given himself every chance of a decent pro career and seems to have made the most of his opportunities.

Funnily enough Transfermarkt is where I got my stats from. How have we managed to get different stats?
