VAR bear with me

When I say everydody I'm really referring to players/managers/media who jump on as soon as there's an error by officials that could have been prevented by VAR. Then we get it and don't know how to use it.

We are the only sport that has introduced technology but have failed to improve on the mistakes. Some of that is down to the inept officiating, some of it is down to players who are out there to con the referee. Whether it's a dive to gain a penalty or freekick, which may result in a card - or somebody feigning injury to either get a the game stopped.

As soon as there is a directive for referee's to stop the game for a head injury there will be clubs working overtime in how to take advantage of that.

VAR has got itself in a right muddle with offsides. I have been saying for years that we need to go back to linesmen actually doing their jobs. Any tight decisions go with what was decided on field, and only overturned when there's daylight between the players involved. Burnley's disallowed goal for offside was ridiculous on Saturday. How can somebody's arm be offside when the defenders foot is closer to the goal ? Are we saying that Chris Richards might be deemed to be in an offside position just because of his choice of haircut ?

Punish the players that are deliberately cheating, stop surrounding the refs trying to intimifate and influence their decision. It doesn't happen in rugby or cricket. Stop managers from being allowed on the pitch after the game, and stop the Arteta's of this world from prowling the touchline constantly in the 4th Official's ear. He knows what he's doing and it's changing the landscape of football.
The technology works given the limited camera angles available. What doesn’t work are poor quality match referees and those referees operating VAR. It’s a sad indictment of our match officials when the best we can offer UEFA as representative is Kavanagh. Howard Webb is responsible and it now appears that the job is just too big for him.

With regards to the Burnley-Brentford game Simple Sam Barrot, Webb’s favourite, was on referee duty and once again courted controversy.

Or just get rid of the offside rule. Teams take a chance whether to keep players back to defend or leave them free to attack; rather like when a goalkeeper goes up the other end for a last minute corner. The game would find its own balance.
I think if we did that then we'd just have 4/5 players, all 6 foot plus camped in the six yard box and keepers just launching the ball. It's bad enough watching how Arsenal crowd the keeper out with set pieces and long throws. It would just be like that for the entire game.

The DRS in cricket works really well with LBW's. Everybody accepts that the ball tracking isn't 100% accurate. If the ball shows it just to be clipping the stumps the decision stays with the what the umpire decided.

Can anyone remember Why The offside rule was introduced in the first place? AI seems to think it has always been around in one way or another. I thought it was introduced at some point more recently (than 1866!) to stop 'goal hanging'

VAR is only a part of what's wrong with the Premier League.

The Laws of the game are also a contributor. Handball and offside laws have been changed to the point that I wonder if the reasons behind that is to justify the existence of VAR !

But back to VAR. My prediction when it was implemented was that already barely competent matchday officials would just be given another channel to demonstrate their incompetence. And I believe that to be the case.

And in pre VAR days the old cliche was that good and bad refereeing decisions even themselves out over the course of a season. Now we're saying the same thing about VAR.

As I posted on the Utd-Palace thread, Chris Kavanagh is a classic example of refereeing on auto pilot, safe, he assumes, in the knowledge that if/when he gets something wrong he will be rescued by his mates at Stockley Park. That's unacceptable.

Once again I spent my Saturday watching L2 football at Bromley. And once again I came away thinking how much more I enjoy that than Premier League football.
Spot on and I intended to make this point as well. The laws seem so ambiguous that VAR can usually reach more than one conclusion on most 50:50 calls. Why that is may be one interesting question but it has the potential at the very least for deep rooted corruption.

Ive always thought of a very simple - and far easier way to measure - version of offside would be the following:

The game is called Football - so just determine offside by feet alone.

If the attackers foot is beyond the defenders feet then offside. Level or behind, then oneside

Takes away the chins, shoulders, elbows and knees etc ...

Just watch their feet.

We have all come up with that one lol

Paint a new line midway between the goal line and the halfway line - offside is from this line, not the halfway line as a present.

Get rid of VAR. Have four linesmen. One set for off sides. One set for their traditional duties. Add a linesman behind the goal and that ends Arsenal's crappy tactics. Scrap VAR is what we should all want. We'll be better off with humans. Just use a couple more on the pitch. Get rid of the VAR teams and it evens out anyway.

Could we not use the same system as in cricket, by giving both teams 1 or 2 review appeals.
The team then chooses when they want to apply them, this might also stop them from hounding out the referees.

VAR is all about humans. It’s just the quality we hire is appalling. Tomorrow we have a junior referee on VAR who has never who has never handled a League match let alone a premier league one. How on earth do you think we are going to get sensible decisions without experienced people operating it.

Must be desperate to ensure that Spurs get 3 points and stay up. 😉

^^^^^ This . A brilliantly simple solution, that gives instantaneous decisions.

The game is much quicker now with a lighter ball that you can kicker faster, for longer distances. More officials with specific remits is the best-fit solution

I've been banging on about this for ages. Works in cricket and tennis really well.

2 challenges per match, and you keep them if you 'win' the review.

To be fair, if he's new he's more likely to be paying attention to what's going on.
