Censorship and Social Media

We decided. That’s how democracy works!

We can decide ourselves. Not an issue. We are are mature, informed, adults.

Children aren’t. Nor are some adults. They need our help and protection. We need protection from the consequences of allowing the impressionable to view dangerous content but, more importantly, so do children and the vulnerable.
Unless, apparently, you voted for Brexit and will vote for Reform. Isn’t that basically what you have said on here numerous times?

I suggest you read the last post to me on the other thread. These children you want to protect so much are the very same the trans community and democrats convince are in the wrong body. Do you not see the irony?

There is no irony because I am quite sure no one in either the “trans community” or the Democrats are doing anything at all to try to influence children they are in the wrong body.

That you think they are doing that just shows how ignorant you are of what actually is done when someone expresses doubts over their sexuality. There is no encouragement. Just support in difficult times.

That we are capable as adults to take our own decisions, whilst children are not, is self evident.

That some of those decisions look stupid to me doesn’t change that. I have never argued that you shouldn’t be allowed to vote. Only that we ought not, in our Parliamentary democracy, have been asked to vote in a referendum. Our voting being done at General Elections.

But at what age does a child become an adult; to do adult things?
It depends on the culture;,Iraq men can marry 9 year old girls (the girls don’t get to vote).
Under 18s identities are protected and unnamed in the media for murder etc., yet will be able to vote at 16 in future elections.
Strange how different societies view things differently…

Even if these kids are not even pubescent.
How can a child actually be so sure at such a young age. I used to play Barbie and tiny tears with my twin sisters when they were about 11 and I was 9.
Nowadays I would be rushed a shrink to convince me I wanted to be a girl .

Should a child be allowed to get a tattoo? Say a full face deal?

What happens in other, backward, countries is not relevant to this.

What age we determine someone to be mature enough to be capable of taking responsibility for themselves is always going to be a matter of opinion. I don’t really have one because I don’t know enough. It’s why we need experts.

So you don't agree with children having their private parts cut of because they think they are different?
Not by way of mutilation, of course not. No clinician would do that. It would directly conflict with the hippocratic oath, a key part of which is “do no harm”. Elective surgery is not mutilation. Mutilation is always harmful.

In the UK, even if they wanted elective surgery, children under 18 cannot be given such treatment.

If you don’t have an opinion on these matters how do you know who to vote for?

Careful, there are certain mutilations done to children way under 18 for religious reasons…

Doesn't the principle of Gillick competence allow children under 16 to consent to medical treatment, including elective procedures, without parental knowledge or permission?

I am no expert in this field, which seems like a complicated minefield for the clinicians to navigate. One in which the Court of Protection must sometimes get involved. Hopefully in most cases there won’t be that need and agreement between parents and their child is clear.

You though were asking about what I would permit. Not whether my permission would be the final determinant.

Where do you get this idea from? You have been reading too much right wing media!

It isn’t true. It’s a totally natural part of family life and would, rightly, be ignored.
