Reform

Well if some on here had their way some of my son’s friends in his class would be forcibly deported along with their families. That will be fun to explain to him what is going on and why.

Why? What is their situation / status. What are the circumstances?

What is your point? What is this in reference to?
Forgive me for jumping in (without reading the previous posts and, thus, context) but I am interested in your answer to this.

The anti immigration lobby seems pretty strong on HOL and I wonder if this presents a good cross section of UK folk. Thus, my genuine interest.

Thus, what do you want? Stop the small boats? Stop/restrict students? Stop/restrict legal migration from certain countries and, if so, which?

And in terms of who is here, remove just illegal migrants? Or start deporting other groups and, if so, which.

I welcome answers from you or any other poster.

I wont speak for others but I am against:

Illegal immigration

Legal immigration that requires taxpayer support e.g. benefits unless it is vital to the country e.g. doctors

Legal immigration where people overstay their visa or having arrived on a legal path then claim asylum

Criminals being allowed to stay however they arrived.

I am in favour of limited legal immigration where these people can benefit our country eg. skills shortages.

Happy to respond to you on these points once I’ve responded to DanH after his clarification.

Doctors don't secure benefits they have not earned.

Not sure whether you can DBS a legal applicant unless we have an arrangement with their law enforcement (our resident border control can help😉 but a court finding a migrant guilty of an offence should be able to rescind citizenship and order removal direct from sentence served.

Selective migration based on skill "need" is good in theory but in practice is fraught with, I suspect, insurmountable issues and cost.

Agreed. I couldn't think of a better example. There are plenty of low paid jobs that are unskilled we do not need migrant for those. Too many people here choosing not to work.

In other Imagine My Shock news - Reform found ‘very little waste’ at Kent County Council.

“We made some assumptions that we would come in here and find some of the craziness that [Elon Musk’s cost-cutting vehicle] Doge found in America . . . and that was wrong, we didn’t find any of that,” Chamberlain said.

This may be a leap, but it’s almost like some posters on here don’t have the first clue what they are talking about.
So I guess you are pleased that reform are being honest. Is that not what you expected them to say? Maybe when you think about this you may well put your cross in the box of the honest party. I don’t think lab or cons fit that so you will be in a quandary now danh.

Quite, and I also accept that AI and automation are likely to reduce the reliance on labour across many sectors and, thus, the need for migrants.

However, demographics could still be this nation's biggest threat as the asset hungry pension sector inexorably expands without a corresponding increase in a working population who must feed, service and protect them.

I am flogging the same horse I always do, but that used to be literate, largely skilled Europeans who came (when the market called) and (crucially) left when the jobs dried up. The free market operating largely effectively. This country voted against that.

You cannot replace this with some quango who free up immigration places to reflect current skill shortage as that will be inefficient and ineffective not least through decision inertia where data shows we need carpenters but, by the time we open the door to chippies, that crisis has passed and we need electricians.
