Season Expectations

I think we’re going to lucky here Jacey - in that SELF INTEREST will come to our rescue ………OG his CV (securing his next job) JP his World Cup dream.
Good point elphers, could work in our favour, there’s no doubt our recent poor run looks bad on Ollie and he knows it, which is why he had his little outburst after the sunderland game, frustration.

As much as hate to say it the most important person is still OG and Mateta isn’t far off either.

If OG is motivated to win and stop the blame game, can put his arm around Mateta and get him contributing, stabilise the rest of the group, figure out how to break down a low block and use the squad we have wisely the end can still justify the means and we can have a decent league finish and European cup run.

If JP can get over himself, get fit, play for the team, support Larsen and adapting to the system and then rotate with him, scoring a few as he is more fresh… he can earn his big move.

A lot of ifs basically. If not, then Parish needs to get rid of OG and keep Mateta away, or we could have a very poor season and could even be relegated.

Really? The club spends £48m on a new striker and he's going to play second fiddle? I think not. Mateta can either have a little sulk or get his knee fixed and get down to working hard.

Expectations for the next few months? Well from my usual position of making some of the reglular pessimistic posters here appear decidedly cheerful, I can see no further than a real relegation struggle. As for the Conference League, no, I don't think this is realistic. I simply cannot see any opposition playing into our hands and adopting tactics which allows our preferred counter-attacking system.

Relegation wouldn't surprise me in the least. OG has often said that he prefers working with small squads, whatever that means considering the various tirades aimed at, well, anyboby that listens, and he now has so many forwards I fear he won't know where to start regarding selection and system/tactics. I sure I also saw Eddie in one of the training clips on the website. So even assuming that Mateta is injured we can all be curious as to what the team will be on Sunday.

Also I see it as not merely the selection, i.e.pick any 3 from a plethora of non-scoring forwards, but the chance creation. We have gone from being the second highest xG team (correct me if i'm wrong) up to December, to not even looking like creating a goal scoring position. Watching an admittedly fast forward version of the Nottingham match it was like the front three were not on the pitch making any kind of creative pass practically impossible. It's almost as if the team needs to learn how to play again from scratch.

We are 'Birds on the same twig' on this matter.
Not adding to the ranks in central defence and at right-wing back could cost us dearly.

The next month is crucial. If we are still winless coming out of Feb we are going down. The Conference League is a pipe dream. We’ve been absolutely clueless about how to play against defensive sides.

Personally I think we will get handily beaten against the Weed this weekend and that could well be that for OG. I really do not see him turning anything around. His methods have clearly stopped working as you can see by the lack of energy and belief in the players. They look utterly micromanaged.

If we can get rid of OG and get the players remembering they are allowed to play football again then we can still steer clear of relegation but that’s the limit of my expectations

Sorry, I have add something else from the training clips posted about JSL's first day(s). Although there were lots of smiles etc. perhaps indicating a group of happy campers, is it just me but when JSL and was it Guessard, but the shots that nestled in the onion bag were those that went through the keeper. We've seen enough of our current strikers passing in to the hands of the oppos shot-stopper ;-)

Or failing to hit the target when well placed.

The 2 undebatable rules of football, 1 The more times the ball is in the oppo's box the more goals you will score, 2 if the ball is in the oppo's third they wont score, simple but true, only 3 attacking players on the pitch, and the passing back and forward between the CBs is no use to man nor beast.

Don’t forget number 3……if you score more goals than the other team, you’ll win the game

Expectations now are to avoid falling into the relegation battle and to progress, if possible, in Europe. Also to arrive at the end of a season with a defined settled squad, although saying that it would not surprise me to see a few outgoings in summer. The midfield is bypassed regularly and explains why the opposition score more. We need greater control and ball retention in midfield, less treating the ball like a hot potato and more passes finding a colleague in the same colour shirt. This 2 man midfield nonsense has been found out and had its day and I expect a change in the system next season, or earlier, if Glasner wises up or goes.
we don't really have much of a midfield, and if Wharton and Kamada leave then it'll be Hughes plodding round on his lonesome, as Lerma may well be off too.
Definitely a weak area and has been for some time.

Conference for me if the 2 worse teams outside the bottom 3 can play the Europa final and spurs quilify for champions lge , why cant we , keep our heads above relegation will do fine

I stopped having 'Expectations' of Palace a while ago, Except for I expect them to do what noone expects.

I hope that we will at least avoid relegation, and that we are challenging for the Conference league.
