Mateta

I'm hoping the context is that JP has said to Palace 'if' the clubs valuation is met then he wants to leave (i.e last chance at champions League football). That I can understand, not great when it goes public but I can just about take it.

If on the other hand he's just saying he wants to leave and it's kicking up a stink then that's gonna be hard to stomach.

I guess we'll see if he plays on the weekend as I can't imagine any of the interested parties will meet his valuation as so far all the clubs linked seem to have PSR issues.

As is the case at all clubs, as soon as they've done anything of note the player then holds all the cards, or at the very least, the ultimate card of not signing a new contract. Once he's pressed that button the rest is all noise and PR. It's just the numbers that matter now. We either can replace him adequately with the money we are offered for him, or we can't.

As with Guehi, at least JPM has told the club early that he won't be signing a new deal. Guehi seems a natural at managing people, quite professionally touchy feely in that way. Mateta seems a bit more emotional, perhaps he'll bang on about how the club broke his heart or kicked him in the bollocks, or fingered him in the bum, or some s***. Doesn't matter. He's not kept the club in the dark, plans can be made.

Personally, I'd like to see someone get more out of Nketiah and, of course, Johnson. Perhaps the next coach changes the tactics, goes with a more mobile, interchanging forward line. Those players are both the future of the team and a massive investment that cannot be written off.

The biggest issue, which Mateta embodies, is that this is the downside of the 'buy high class potential, develop it, sell it on' approach. Even the journeymen who really just facilitate it all see their personal opportunities change along the way. Mateta isn't in the Guehi, Olise, Eze category, but the inevitable sale of those players will of course destabilise the likes of him. Loads of selling clubs found that domino effect a bit of a challenge.

Perhaps our current approach is better than having an ageing squad with no resale value, but it brings it's own challenges. This is not the only time we'll have this. I expect it from Henderson, La Croix, Sarr...

Mateta thrived when being supported by both Eze and Munoz. He has had some very mediocre games without them. He is obviously a big character who is popular in the dressing room.

Whether he gets sold now, in the summer or ever, I guess depends on who will be the next manager and when he arrives.

That's the big issue. The constant recycling of the playing staff makes perfect sense economically (in fact it's unavoidable in that respect) but any good team, or even place and time, relies on the people and how they feel.

At the time of the cup final there seemed a clear sense of shared aims amongst the players. Show we can mix it with the big boys. Prove yourself. These are human factors, not tactical or ability based. Like the promotion team in 89, or the last time around, the whole endeavour relies as much on the structure of personalities and coinciding ambitions as on ability.

Recycling players is one thing, but maintaining or recreating that focussed atmosphere and culture is far harder. Mateta the player is easier to replace than Mateta the person.

I have some sympathies with his thinking .... I was a plodder, then came along Olise and his mate Eze plus Roy left, so I could play upfront instead of having to track back all the time. I got stronger and the coaching staff showed me how to leverage my strength, hold up play and then run into space where my mates would feed me the ball and I could actually score. I did great last season, but then this season none of my teammates know how to feed me simple passes to run on to, the team has gone to the dogs, totally overworked, made to play with a bad knee and we can't catch a break because the gaffer is totally done. I want to play for France in the World Cup, but there is no way I can score goals with this team and so I need to play with people that will make me look good and get some shots on target, because I am never going to get the ball in the back of the net with this lot. If I throw a hissy fit, then no one will like me, so they have to get rid of me .....

You're spot on. The point surely is though, that this is exactly what a by-product of the current strategy looks like. If you or I had one chance, on our prime, to f***ing go for it, and we knew deep down that it was a once only opportunity because the circumstances surrounding our purple patch were not likely to be repeated, we'd want to make the most of it.

I don't blame him, and I hope he's an example to the other journeymen in our squad. Hopefully Lerma and Richards are looking at him and thinking, if I absolutely smash it for 18 months, I'll be of interest to Juventus etc. Our club is all about motivating humans to fight. To do that they need a goal.

If someone does not want to play for Palace then be gone manager or player.
Spot on. I can get that , but dont slag the club off on your way out the door or as a way of instigating a move , that i cant forgive , he can f*** off now and take that Austrian c*** with him .

Pretty disappointed in Mateta ,viewed him as quite a positive character around the club .

The timing sucks ,like the agent is making most of situation to cause more trouble ,with the players blessing .

Yeah he can go but it can’t be below what 30 /35 million? and a replacement lined up .

No doubt if it don’t happen ‘ il fera grève ‘

If we really want to keep him, not sure that we do.
They could give him 100 grand a week and a lump sum covering all of last season , say 50 grand a week for 52 weeks , in admission that he’s been underpaid for the whole of last year. Which I believe he was.

100 % but Eddie should never of
been on that to begin with.

JP should be £100K-£110k, If he wants to leave show some respect and wait till the summer, not with 9 days left in the window.
