Tennents Super

Location
Sussex, ex-Cronx.
Country
England
Probably only relevant to those 50s plus age group as the super strength mass produced lager disappeared (thank god) some years ago.
(I am aware some craft & small breweries still do very strong, had a chocolate stout recently that turned out to be 8.4% when i was wobbly after a half)

Tennents super was everywhere 80s/90s, skol, kestrel, red stripe jumped on it soon after.
Carlsberg special brew had been around decades, apparantly as a thank you to Churchill after the war.

Depending on the social standing of an area it would be piled high in Offys.
Even supermarkets peddled the fighting juice & some fools actually had it on tap in bars.
Once you got on this gear all other beer was utter pish.

I had a customer i was decorating for that used to get me to drive him down to the local offy at midday as he'd already had 4 tins by then.
So...any super strong lager stories from HOL?
spill the beans.

Hands off Red Stripe.

Hands off Red Stripe.
RS Crucial Brew was their contribution to the homeless / hobo/ park life drinking culture. I assume it was favoured by West Indian alcoholics over Tenants Super or Skol Super.
all of them had to be drunk at just above freezing temperature. When warm it became quite viscous like and to a normal drinker all of them were undrinkable.

Not familiar with that one, regular Red Stipe is normal strength I'd say.

Many many years ago someone told me that Carlsberg Special was frequently referred to in the trade as the Leg Opener. Not that that would be of much use to anyone after 2 or 3 bottles.

good call.
I remember crucial brew now.
As said by others, all these were only drinkable if very very cold.
tasted like vomit if warm.

There became loads of them Special Brew seemed before Tennant's Super and was the tramp's drink. There was Titan Super, Lynx Super, Kestrel Super - all kinds of s***. I drank them all. I made a room in my house out of the empty cans. That's how cool I was. Not an alcoholic. Not trendy anymore clearly.
Tennant's Super was on draft in my regular. Because it was a fighting s*** hole. Which is exactly where I drink now.

When I was a lad our pub had the black T (bar tap) Tenants. Not sure if this was the super lager but it was wife beater.

I would often wake up with a splitting head hangover but with Tenants I got the headache whilst I was still in the pub. Anyway swerved it after a while.

I'm a cider drinker,

Back in the mid 90s K cider was first in bottles. It was about 8.2 in strength. It was a lovely drink.

Then came the cans and it became the drink of choice for down and outs.

I'm not sure if this is a northern or North East thing, but mid nineties in the North East saw an emergence of a beer called Tungsten. I just looked it up now and it is 9%. I am sure it was even more then but could be mistaken.

The warning was in the size of the cans: they were half the size of standard tins. I had half a small tin once and it felt like someone had injected a syringe full of the stuff into each temple.

To repeat: As strong as some of these might be they're like Top Deck compared to this rocket fuel.
