Sporting director Matt Hobbs

Johnson on the left Sarr on the right, JP in the middle and we will flow again.
Wharton and Hughes/Kamada/Lerma in the middle given the freedom to shoot and we will fly high again.
Think there’s a bit more to it than that. Our defending, especially from dead ball situations needs some work done on that. And of course the right wingback situation requires cover. Why we hadn’t got in a loan 1st Jan for that cover is beyond me. It would have solved a lot of the unbalanced within the team as seen again yesterday?

If we had a Director of Football, surely he'd say we need a set piece coach. I think Glasner will be told by Parish, and that Brighty will be saying it. I'm trying to think of that Blackpool dead ball guy who must be retired by now. That kind of person. Our delivery is awful. Our defending looks like it's zonal but players are getting caught out with what their zone is. Go tough man to man and get the near post flick on. That's the basics.

Silly me. Of course. That’s how he got 14 goals last season for us including the Cup Final winner. By never running forward into goal scoring positions
He wasnt running in behind like johnson + sarr does he was making late runs into the box not necessarily stretching the defence

DF did do a good job in the way he sold Palace to the likes of Olise, Eze and Wharton. He took a lot of time to get to know them and their families.
However these were players that were well recognised as the best young players in the championship. It’s not like he has scouted some unknown from Brazil that was the next Pele (Franca)
what the recent purchases show is that it is so difficult to get the right player in. Not only do they need to have quality but also be the right fit. Also for any new player to come into the premier league it will be a massive step up (even for seasoned internationals) and this is seen in nearly all new players across all teams.
His talent I.d is superb, look at the players he wanted to sign and where they are now, his hit rate would be higher then most I'd guess

Exactly why I was miffed at the brennan signing
Agreed. Johnson - who hasn't exactly hit the ground running - is very similar to a player we already have in Sarr. It would make much more sense if he was an obvious bargain or Sarr was one of those most likely to leave: neither is the case
I just hope he is not another bench player we have bought from another London club for an extortionate price, like Nketiah. At least he can boast more than 5 league goals in a season

After the weekend debacle and humiliation, which will last forever in any discussion about the magic of the FA cup, maybe the club needs to make a statement signing such as Connor Gallagher rather than allowing Villa or Spurs to get him. I say this knowing it might sound ridiculous, but now more than ever we need to have a marquis player and right now we don't have one - we always used to.

And our previous '' marquis '' ( sic ) signings worked out so well didn't they....Sakho, Beneteke, Nketiah - Pino has hardly pulled up any trees either.

We need to get a loan in now for that right wing back position. Or throw money in and buy someone. It’s glaringly obvious that’s the position that needs fixing. It’s been our downfall and climaxed on Saturday with Sosa in that position in the second half showing how bad it is. Then we need a centre forward to challenge JPM / replace him after 60 or 70 minutes. I hope these deals are coming now or our present problem remains

for me our last real signing of a marquee player was Yohan Cabaya how Pardew got him here god knows , we have had some good promising signings that become good but nothing that matched that

The worship of Freedman and his transfer acumen does not match up with the facts. For every Jedinak, there's a Plange and Ebiowei.

That's not to say he hasn't found any gems (Wharton) but Olise and Eze were on everyone's radar.

Yes, but no-one else was prepared to take the risk on these two. Similarly with Guehi; Chelsea, apparently, were surprised we offered as much as we did for him after his stints at Swansea. We spotted something in him which no-one else seems to have done or if they did, they weren't prepared/able to put up the money.

As for Freedman, he was a decent DOF but no more than that IMO. As you say there were a number of duds, but apart from Franca (Textor influence?) and Ahamada (and possibly Nketiah), none of them cost us a packet.

The idea that he is a genius for spotting their talent when they were players of the year at their respective clubs is for the birds.

Taking the risk - albeit a low one - would have been on Steve Parish who would have negotiated the transfer and salary.

There might have been other factors in that they wanted to stay in London or other Prem clubs were not looking for players in that particular position which helped get their signatures.

Guehi cost £18 million so it would indicate that Chelsea rated him highly and like Palace, knew he was a decent player.

The failures were pretty cheap purchases.
He had a talent an he was our greatest loss when he left - I said so at the time.
