Glasner Out

Having read a few of the comments here and suffered the expected barrage of sarcasm from my friends in the pub at lunchtime I wondered if I watched a different game to others yesterday.

Living where I do I haven’t been to Selhurst for years so only watch the TV games and an occasional away game. I do though get to watch a lot of National League football, so I knew what to expect. These guys have learned all the modern tactics. They know how to block, press and not allow time on the ball. They know the dark arts too and are fit and often pretty tough. They know how to fight. What they lack are the skills to overcome these tactics so the games are often not full of skilled flowing football, but battles.

So I knew it would be tougher than some expected as they were bound to be highly motivated. Even with the weakened team we fielded we did have the skills to prevail and even if we weren’t able to show them all the time we created enough chances to win the game, but as so often recently they just missed. They scored one good goal through their only tactic of relying on set pieces and another lucky one through bad bounces and what looked to me to be an offside leg.

The TV commentators said the pitch was good and suited Palace. I disagree. I thought it produced a bounce that we consistently misjudged and a surface that bobbled. I also thought the officials were reacting as though they wanted to be part of history and let some challenges go that would not be allowed in the PL.

I still think that 99 times out of 100 with the team we put out we would have won the game. We were cruising until they scored. We only needed one of the near misses to have gone in. If the offside goal was ruled out and extra time played our fitness level would have shown.

It was just one of those games. Embarrassing. Disappointing. Not a disaster.
I think that is a bit of an injustice to Macclesfield.
We didn’t deserve anything from the game and in my opinion 2-1 flattered us.
Not necessarily on goal attempts but from pure determination. They wanted it and we didn’t. Our tactics (or lack of) was lump it up the field and hope for the best. Whereas they were calm when they had the ball and didn’t panic when they didn’t.

I think it’s time for a little honesty here. I like OG and I would prefer him to stay. I would also like the board to buy a few more players. I think it’s the uncertainty around players and the manager potentially leaving that is having an impact. For me, if OG has signed a pre-contract somewhere or is going then we need to be working with his replacement on target players so we get a jump on the summer. Because I believe OG owes it to us to tell us his plans and allow us to build a team for the new manager, as if he can sign a precontract then we can and should. We can’t do that all the time there’s this ‘is he, isn’t he’ bollox so it stifles progress. We know MG is going so let’s get his replacement in now and start playing him. MG can sit on the bench and we can blood the new players into the team now ready for next season. MG’s going, he’s the past. I really don’t care about his World Cup prospects (he could have signed and allowed us to get money, then the uncertainly about him staying next season would have seen us play him) I care about our team, the rest of this season and next etc.

I normally judge a manager by how they fix problems.

we've been conceding soft goals from set plays for over a month now and nothing has changed.
looked into that most teams seem to have same issue with defending set plays , was said theres a high volume of goals coming from them than any other season think theres been 200 goals already come from set plays direct and 2nd phase , so its who every works it out first , remember we went through a period of defending them well so dont know whats changed

I wrote in a post above: "All well and good when things are rosy but what happens when things get rough? Are you up to the challenge? We'll find out soon enough."
I think that Glasner is finding it difficult and is incapable of improvisation. So far he hasn't adapted to the downturn. His condescending and arrogant statements took him down a notch in my estimation, although they can be seen from a psychological angle as a shield to protect the ego. Simply put, his methodology has been found out, *even* by a club who we just had to turn up to beat...

I agree with you. I'd like OG to stay. And I would certainly have liked the club to have performed better in the summer transfer window.

However I don't think the recent run of results is due to uncertainty over OG and MG's contracts. Whatever the status with those issues, Sarr is still at the AFCON, Munoz etc., are still injured and the likes of Uche and Sosa are still below par signings.

A contract is a two way agreement. OG's expires in June/July and he is under no obligation to make a decision now nor does he owe that to us. Parish has just spent our record fee for Brennan Johnson without knowing who the manager will be next season.

As for benching Guehi that is a preposterous suggestion. Why is it some people don't understand that a players prime responsibility is to himself and his career - not the continuing welfare of a football club !!

I understand that. What I’m saying about benching Guehi is if we get a new CB in then a run in the team, in favour of a player who is leaving, sets us up well for next season as he will be integrated and that will minimise teething problems. Of course Marc’s responsibility is to himself and his family but the clubs is to the club and doing what’s best. It isn’t a desire, to me it would be logical.

This was written before yesterday.
The result and ensuing press coverage will not have helped Glasner's CV at all. In fact the last six weeks will be making any top club potentially pursuing OG take a much closer look now.
A piece in the Times this morning by Tony Cascarino suggesting 'arrogant' Glasner would not be a good fit for any big club.
I'm not a fan of Cascarino, but he makes valid points about Ollie's inflexibility.

It would therefore be better to get a fee for Marc in this window if we weren't to play him.

If that's the case then the club need to manage the situation better than they did last August.

Agree with this - but we have to get someone in first so probably a moot point anyway!!!

We’re playing Guehi because he’s one of the best centre backs in the country and it would be insanity and perhaps suicidal to bench him. That being said I don’t see a pressing need to replace him. We have Canvot and Lerma with Riad starting to play again for the under 21s.

If as expected Glasner decides to leave then the new manager is more likely to play 4 at the back since managers who play with a back 3 are in the minority. Lacroix and Richards would be a mobile and effective pairing at central defence with cover from Riad for Max and Canvot for Chris and Lerma for either.

Johnson fits Glasner’s system as a 10 but would be equally comfortable as a winger should we play differently under our next manager. What we do need to concentrate on is a striker who has the potential to score 20 goals a season (difficult I know!) and a goal scoring midfielder.

this is the first period of what I would call proper adversity we've had under OG. I don't count the slow start we had last season as there were reasons for that. I'm surprised that everyone is quaking right now, when we're all so quick to criticise other clubs for axing managers at the first sign of a few iffy performances. Yes we're going through a really meh period right now, however i think that managers, and especially OG who has achieved more than any other manager at this club, should be given a chance (and the support) to figure it out. Recruitment is a big factor. I don't think we have any match winners available right now. But Saturday was all about attitude and that is something a manager can fix. Yes OG might not want to resign for us. But I want him to continue this current era we're in and see if we can re-climb the peak we hit last season and kick on from the success while we still have the opportunity.

Not even that, more like goals coming in from other areas, goals from Sarr and Johnson, goals from the midfield, depending on formation. If Glasner goes I think we can say goodbye to the 3-4-2-1 line-up.

Would he not be in breach of his contract with us if he's signed a pre contract elsewhere?

Whilst we all know conversation between clubs and agents happen all the time signing any form of contract when you are in contract with another company would normally be grounds for an immediate dismissal?

Glasner is a one iron golfer it is crystal clear he has no plan B.

In fairness to Marc, apart from Macclesfield he has still been one of our most consistent performers. We will massively miss him, as with Ollise and Eze , world class players are not easily replaced.(not for our budget)
Marc has demonstrated great professionalism since the Liverpool deal collapsed and I am confident Macclesfield was a one off.

No, he can negotiate with another club with less than 6 months left, would be nice if he told Parish, perhaps he has?

I’m feeling as I did at the start of last season (think we went until October for our first win) that if Glasner went then that is okay by me. But then of course we had our best season ever and then until December this season was having another great season. Brighton away in a few games time is a big one, if we lose to Sunderland and Chelsea before that. I can see the end for Glasner looming. Let’s hope before Brighton we are back to the Palace of 2025 otherwise I think he will be gone. Unless that happens before then?
