4 Mayoral elections postponed until 2028, why is that ? šŸ¤”
I am in an area that had our local elections cancelled this year. So now it looks like no elections for another 3, perhaps we will get a rebate on Council tax! Labour MP on tv saying nothing is ready to go ahead šŸ¤” why announce them then? Why have I been inundated with flyers from prospective candidates? Labour are running scared and turning us into a banana republic

Enough time to set up reform for being a scapegoat when it’s impossible to manage.

The choices are either Labour are not competent enough to arrange a local election. Which every other government has been able to do. Or that Labour are undemocratic and unwilling to lose power. Or both. How is this ok exactly? Surely The Guardian is on to this?

Does that mean we have Miss Banana as a mascot?

Linger a few weeks and the baillifs backed by police will give you a visit and remove ten times more than the Council tax as soppy ideas go that is the daftest.
Can't vote for my council don't deserve my money. If enough people stopped paying for it will they make room in the prisons for everyone. Street lighting off at 10, police non existent, bins emptied when they feel like it. Yeah all that for ££ month. Remember the poll tax riots. We need some more of that. My view and stand by it. 🤬 Take, take, take cnuts.

people talk big and then chicken out by not paying it will cost you loads of money about as sensible as bungee diving with no rope with the lemming community. I'm just telling you this will end in tears. You will have only memories of your t.v. oven etc etc.

It seems people are getting their knickers in a twist over something that is all to do with efficiency and the avoidance of wasting money. Not political shenanigans. If it was the latter they would have all been postponed. Not cancelled. Postponed. Nor will the Councils cease to operate and provide services. So no rebates.

I heard they can save even more money by just getting rid of elections altogether. Efficiency and all that.

So what party is the mayor in each postponed election then?

Absolute rubbish. Ours were meant to be he,d in May 2025, which were then delayed until 2026. Now postponed until 2028! Guess who were favourites to win ?
Money has been wasted by the prospective candidates, who, in good faith, assumed elections were to held next year. All 4 that have been cancelled were predicted to be won by Reform

This was for the first ever mayor in our area. Labour had amalgamated several areas, many which were Tory, to include Brighton! Unfortunately for them Reform are favourites, so best bet is to delay. No shenanigans at all šŸ¤”

I suggest you read the explanation I referenced. Which comes from a non partisan, non profit local government information organisation. I prefer to trust their analysis than that of any politically motivated one.

It’s more than 4 and none appear to have been postponed until 2028.

They are abolishing the absurd Police Commissioners, they should now abolish the equally absurd Metro Mayors.

They could certainly save money by doing it differently.

Why not ban all political party involvement and only allow people to stand in their own names as independents, with strict limits on the money they spend and where it comes from. They could profess broad support for a party but not be supported, or restricted, by it. Independents already play significant roles in local government, being people who genuinely care about their locality rather than their political future. This would enhance that. They would need to convince people directly, on the doorstep, in public meetings and on TV. Rather than just because of a label. As our national politicians often cut their teeth in local politics this would produce people we want, rather than those we are given.
