Working Class

I recall several years ago imbibing in a Public House outside Leicester.
A saloon bar loudmouth under the influence of alcohol sidled up to me at the bar and launched into a tirade about him being "Working class", 'Yours Truly' being an "Upper class snob" not welcomed in those parts and that I was no better a human being than himself.
My riposte was that I never claimed that I was his superior, he had skills that I do not possess and vice versa.I added that we all had different strengths and weaknesses and then suggested that he remove himself from my presence. He retreated muttering away as he took a circuitous route back to his chair.

In the Welcome Inn again?

In the Welcome Inn again?
This incident was in the mists of time and I simply cannot remember the name of the Public House.
My panama hat, slacks and tweed jacket clearly formulated his opinion that I was an "Upper class snob".
I remember this garb as my dear friend passed comment on this attire and added that the oaf drew conclusions based on my choice of clothing.

I expect it is a mosque now anyway.

You were in the wrong bar, safer for you in the saloon.

I am not aware there was a 'Public' and a 'Saloon'.
I followed my dear friend into the establishment, he was resident in those parts.
Maybe it was an error ordering a pink gin and a slice of venison pie rather than a pint of mild and a bag of pork scratchings.

Is the term "working class" not one consigned to history, like serf, squire... or b******?

I went to comp and was raised in a council house by a single mother. That is a working class upbringing.

But my mum was a nurse and not an unskilled or semi skilled factory worker.

So what am I?

(Those whose opinions differ from mine might be tempted by the open goal I just left in that last line, but try and stay on point).

Well, as you said, the term feels very dated and consigned to history.

So it seems a bit contradictory to then use it to define us 😉 .

But if we must define it, I would say you are working class.

Nurse is semi-skilled, but blue-collar, and not professional. If she was a Doctor you would be middle class. At least that's how I think it works

Where are footballers in the scheme of things? Come off some crappy estate and earn millions - do they automatically become a different class? It's a tricky one because a few of them have no class at all, working or otherwise.
