Crystal Palace vs Man Utd match thread

Maybe so Willo, maybe so. The problem is today, we've got ELEVEN games to play in just over the next month of which nine are Premier. Nine are looking like very tough opposition. There is absolutely no way we are equipped to face this challenge. To hell with what happened last summer.
We have to prepare for the forthcoming onslaught with what we have got today. Glasner for sure will be fully aware of this serious dilemma. He has to think of the best way of dealing with it.
Overload is coming down upon us like a very big dark cloud. I am seriously concerned.
I happen to believe that we are on the rocky road to perdition but hopefully out of darkness cometh light and gloom will give way to sunshine.

After a s*** week involving trips to Stade de la Meinau and Selhurst Park it’s the same olde thing…Chances, chances, chances!

We are just not taking them and this needs to change!

I can’t bear the pain or frustration of analysing it any further 😕

One thing I'll say for Glasner is: what is the point of multi billionaire owners? We're like paupers who can never do anything. It reminds me of Ebenezer Scrooge. Maybe he's thinking that too. Blitzer, Harris, Johnson - all pointless so far.
One owner is what we need first. Not this whatever it is.

None have come here to spend money, they've come to make it.
Simon Jordan gambled and spent, it didn't work and lead to admin and almost liquidation. The club has to be run on a sound financial basis and for us that necessarily means we are a selling club.
How they do it seems to be to buy prospects and see if they can adapt. Buying stand out players from the championship has been one tactic, Olise, Eze, Wharton, Plange, Ebiowi, Esse etc. Also from other sources Uche, Canvot. Some have to be moved on others make it and get sold for high fees, its a cattle market.
I don't know where Wharton is in his contract but in his last yr they will sell.
Whether Geuhi goes in Jan or the summer is an interesting watch but he won't be here next season.
You can push the boat out for established players but it rarely works, Nketiah doesn't even start.

Clyne, Hughes and Lerma aren't getting any younger either.

We haven't replaced the goals that came through Olise and Eze, both contributed to the tally. It's caught up with us, simple really. Mateta's general hold up play and effort is good but his finishing is awry, Nketiah is crap, Pino is yet to settle in, and Sarr is out. Goal scoring is expected from the frontline, yet they miss far more sitters than they convert, so the current dilemma hardly comes as a surprise.
One can only hope that in an upcoming game everything somehow by the grace of god ends up in the back of the net. One can hope.

I was very surprised to hear OG calling the Board out yesterday.
Not long ago, he was comfortable with the situation and maybe he should concentrate on us scoring goals instead?
Thursday and yesterday, shooting boots would have seen two wins by half time but instead Parish is to blame.
He has gone right down in my estimation after those interviews.
I'm agree I can remember him saying at the start of the season that we had enough players and he was happy with the squad. Seems to be changing his stance to fit the situation

He may have said that at the start of the season but I doubt he really thought that. I can only assume he didn't want to kick up a fuss. We all knew this was going to happen with the lack of quality backup and too many fixtures.

Much has been said about the squad size, which is fair, but hasn't Glasner come out and stated that he likes smaller Squads? He has a major flaw in his Management style in that he cannot teach just anyone to play it. His game and methodology are the reason for the success we've had, but it seems he has a hard time assimilating players into the fold. hence why January signings for Glasner are pointless (unless he's worked with them before), as it takes them 6 months to come up to speed. That's why I think Uche has a chance - at least he's getting minutes, so he sees something there. No idea why Esse or JRS haven't had a sniff. Glasner appears to have discarded them.

he says we should have invested, but what does he expect from a Transfer window? especially for a club like us. We're not Liverpool/ManU/Barca and he's not Pep, who everyone dreams of playing for. Just because we want them, doesn't mean they want to come. They look at their options, and try to get the best deal, this often means waiting til late in the window. Add that out FFP restrictions (didn't we have to sell to buy last year?), apparent with Uche's demotion to Loan... and SP tried to get deals done early - (or not at all) with that frankly weird Eze release clause nonsense, which simply didn't work. Could we have done better in the window? - almost certainly, but not a huge amount without risking some serious complications. We obviously don't know what was said behind closed doors, or who he wanted, but how many players was he expecting to bring in to make for better squad depth in order to find the 3 or 4 he would be willing to risk on the pitch? Hindsight is everything.

OG's outburst was one of frustration, but born out of an unrealistic expectation of what's possible in a xfer window, and his stubbornness/inability to use the whole of the playing staff available to him.

And probably annoyance that he has to go do MORE shooting drills on the training pitch this week!

I expected a strong enough start, a mid season lull, and then a run of say ten or so at the end of the season. If I'm right we might not enjoy from now until maybe February too much. I always think we're a bit streaky. We go on runs.

I think that’s well put and sadly true. He’s liking for small squads is now our downfall. Saying that, if we had not made those atrocious misses in the last two matches and games before that like the Everton defeat we may not be having this discussion. We can certainly see that so many matches, especially those Thursday and weekend ones are taking it out on the small number of players he selects. How we get around Mateta missing chances and a now missing Sarr as well as Pino being unlikely to score I don’t know :-(

I think you make a number of good, valid points.

To me it boils down to this ;

If I was a coach that preferred working with smaller squads then my main concern would be that all the players in that squad would be of quality and capable of playing within my chosen style.

So with that in mind, do you think that the squad has sufficient quality to be as competitive as it needs to be this season ? I don't.

Having a small squad isn't so much the issue, rather, having a small pool of misfiring goal scorers very much is. Eze and Olise score regularly for their new clubs, that is what we are missing, players who know where the net is. Tactics may have to change and the midfield time runs into the box with more frequency rather than knock it up to Mateta and hope for the best.

No, this is what actually happens, either the manager goes to the DOF, and recommends players and vice versa, and a decision is made between all parties if the player is available, affordable, etc. if he is we try and buy them, if not, we look for someone else on the same process, no player is forced on Glasner, or Roy or any manager, managers get annoyed if the target is too expensive or not available, understand Grumpy.

Again wrong.

You have 0 clue how things work.

We are speaking about how Palace operate each club is different.

We operate that the DOF and his team which consists of the likes of data analyst/scouts put together lists.

The input the manager has is they would discus tactics so the target for recruitment would be fitting into that. (OG this past window had to speak more with SP because we had no DOF and the list he had put together before leaving they missed out on them to much clowning around with Europa stuff)

All of this has been confirmed as I said before by former managers and SP.

Stop living in your fantasy land and join reality.

Money side of thing is Finance department and SP again nothing to do with anyone else.

If brains were gunpowder, i don't think you would have enough to blow your hat off. 😎

The multi degrees I hold and the field of work would prove otherwise.

Do you even have a high school qualification I doubt it

Its all very well for OG to bemoan the lack of signings and he has a point but fatigue is not usually a factor when it comes to finishing. THIS is what has been letting us down since the Liverpool home League game. When we were winning no one cared but I've been saying for a while now if we dont address this problem its going to bite us on the arse.
Finishing is more of a problem right now than a thin squad

So Im back ,the dog walking duties complete

I hoped ,I really hoped we would pull this one back but it seems my fears were right and we just stumbled to an un-glorious defeat .

Rinse and repeat it seems with our midweek outings taking more away from us than it gives . Fatigue may play a small part but more likely the time to prepare for the next match is what is giving us problems .
As mentioned we need a couple of oven ready players as history has shown if you try to do Europe on the cheap it will trip you up
Problem for me is we don’t take many chances. We go 2-0 Saturday we don’t lose. Not many goals are scored against our actual system in open play. It’s set pieces which hurt us mainly.

if Glasner develops a reputation for throwing his toys out of the pram, if he doesn't get his way, like a spoilt brat, then his options of moving to a big club will be limited or non existent.
From the article - "During one of these press conferences, he spoke about youth player Dario Gebuhr with these comments seen as disrespectful towards the 20-year-old. These outbursts were seen negatively within the team. " I believe that these sentiments may be held in the squad in regards to Romain but due to form of team prior to this poor run its been muted.
