Wolves vs. Crystal Palace match thread

Agree 100% on Mateta.

I don’t think Devenny has done badly closing games out, when we were tiring and had the game won. I don’t think he has shown anything to suggest he is a number 10 when we need a goal. I’d like to see him get a game at left wing back, like he does for NI, to give Mitchell a rest. I think he has potential generally.
Isn’t that why we bought Sosa?

Bit lucky we were playing Wolves. Richards and Guehi were under par. Some good first time passing to find Kamada and Pino in space but they did not make the most of it. Wharton and Munoz had arguably their best games this season. The former actually had a good shot blocked that led to the latter's goal.

Pino looked delighted to have scored. Although well struck, it was in the middle of the goal and went right over Johnstone's hand. I would have been disappointed if Henderson had conceded. As a Spain regular, you would expect him to be our best player. Let us hope there is more to come. Similar players bought at a higher cost like Reijnders, Simons and Wirtz have struggled more

Johnstone got a hand to it but it was too powerful. Not convinced it was saveable tbh

Wharton was involved in everything.

I note there's a bit of criticism creeping in for Mateta on these boards.
Personally I didn't think his chance today was a sitter.
The keeper did well and came out and narrowed the angle.
I've just watched Haaland miss a one on one v Newcastle and £65 million Woltenmade miss a hat trick in the same game.
I recall Nketiah missing a few last season where he has hit the ball straight at the keeper.
The fact is there are not that many clinical finishers around.
The last assured one on one finishers I've seen in our league are Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler, with their so called ice running through their veins.
Kane, Aguero, Henry, Defoe and Haaland all have been great goalscorers, but they still missed their fair share of chances.
Mateta has arguably been our best goalscorer at this level and I think deserves the benefit of the doubt.

The only criticism is that he took a poor first touch that got the ball stuck under his feet a bit too much leading to a delay and failure to set himself. Had that touch been better I think he'd have probably scored.

How you can include DK in the same breathe as Wharton and Munoz is literally beyond me. He was a 2/10 compared to their 8.

But in general, we weren’t bad! But let’s be honest, wolves were and are toilet.
Perhaps you missed the ‘great counter press by Daichi Kamada’ for the second goal? That isn’t my description, it’s what OG said after the game.

Guehi and Wharton Munoz absolute mustard today. As someone else has said, Mateta and Sarr out of form at the moment which is a worry given they’re our two most likely to score.

Not even being my usual anti Kamada self when I say he was absolutely trash today. Like the Kamada of old. Losing possession. Misplaced passes. Face like a box of frogs all game. With Hughes on the bench I’m seriously starting to wonder if he has dodgy photos of Glasner.

I agree, and I was slamming him a lot, he was infuriating.

Glasner even picked him out for the second goal citing his press. Watch it and he trots up to Chan and doesn't get within 3 yards of him, and Chan just duffs his pass into Kamada. It's Wharton that sets the goal completely but he didn't get a mention.

It's just weird.

It was a clear opportunity whereby it's just him, the ball, the keeper, and with time and space enough to make a decision, and therein lies the problem, he's good at the instinctive stuff but with a bit of time on his hands he lacks the composure to do what, ostensibly, he's there to do.
Maybe he could have chipped or lobbed the ball over the goalkeeper into the empty net.

I think you bias towards him is blinkered, he is the only CM that makes forward runs, and covers a lot of ground, he is not a number 10, but IMO he is a decent player.

We are a relentless attacking and defending unit. Every week now. Will give anyone a run for their money. Pino looks to have the potential to totally replace EBs….and some. Great to see NKetiah looking so sharp and hungry when he came n. Wharton was brilliant at times. JP is frustrating but he is integral to our best unit….and will get a ok quota of goals while missing sitters at times. Just need to be lucky with injuries for a while longer. Wolves will surely be saying hello to Millwall . Apart from 2 giants up front and Gomez they have little and crowd will soon turn on Edwards..great to be a PAlace fan these past 3 seasons. COYP!

He wasn't yesterday. He was 3/10 for me.

And you're saying Hughes doesn't make forward runs? Or Devenney?
