Train attack

I was on a train with my girlfriend travelling from paddington to cheltenham last tuesday. We were in the seats in quiet carriage at the front of train.

It was strange in that it was quite late into the journey before we had our tickets checked. The poor ticket inspector looked quite visibly shaken and had to sit down when he reached us. He said he'd had trouble with people in another carriage who "didn't seem to think they needed to buy tickets". It explained why they kept playing the message about abuse against their staff not being tolerated.

He was a really nice man and doesn't deserve to be shaken up like that when just doing his job.
In that instance, can't they just press a button and have transport police waiting at the next stop?

I agree it's not fair on a lone unarmed ticket man.

Airline security isn't going to work on trains too many stations and too many unmanned. However The train companies can have contingency plans.

When a plane is hijacked midair the plan is to land at Stanstead where the reception committee is waiting. On each major line I would expect the rail company and police to have an emergency plan. The driver should have instructions in the event of an emergency do the following e.g. divert to Huntingdon.

I would hope this is done now, if not why not.
Airline security would be a waste. If you are mentally ill or a follower of some cult that wants to do harm, it won’t stop them; they’d just cause carnage prior to the security. Like digital ID the authorities would just be inconveniencing everybody rather than concentrating their efforts on the nut jobs.

It appears that the Knife wielding man had three previous incidents within 48 hours of boarding the train and sadly he was not apprehended earlier but the police did well to have hin in 'cuffs within 8 minutes of the issue being raised. The police most have a damned if I do damned if I don't mentality. The British transport police and the Cambridge Constabulary showed wonderful cohesion.

A rail worker credited with saving multiple lives during a mass stabbing on a train has been named as Samir Zitouni.

The 48-year-old's actions on the Doncaster to London King's Cross service on Saturday evening were described as "nothing short of heroic".

Mr Zitouni remains "critically unwell" but stable in hospital, British Transport Police said.

Anthony Williams, 32, from Peterborough, was charged on Monday with 10 counts of attempted murder.
Ten people on board the LNER train, which stopped at Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire, were taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.

An eleventh person went to the hospital later.

Six of those have been discharged, four remain in a stable condition.

David Horne, managing director at LNER, said: "In a moment of crisis, Sam did not hesitate as he stepped forward to protect those around him.

"His actions were incredibly brave, and we are so proud of him, and of all our colleagues who acted with such courage that evening.

"Our thoughts and prayers remain with Sam and his family. We will continue to support them and wish him a full and speedy recovery."

Mr Zitouni has worked for LNER for more than 20 years.

In a statement, his family said: "We are immensely proud of Sam and his courage.

"The police called him a hero on Saturday evening, but to us — he's always been a hero."

They added: "We have been deeply touched by the outpouring of love and kindness shown to Sam, and by the many well-wishes for his recovery.

"The care provided by the hospital and the support from his colleagues at LNER has been incredible."

"Our thoughts and prayers remain with Sam and his family. We will continue to support them and wish him a full and speedy recovery."

there seem to be a heck of a lot of "thoughts and prayers" being randomly thrown about on our Streets ? i wonder why that is ? getting a bit sick of that phrase. We seem to hear it every week now ?

I travelled in France and Italy during a spate of Islamic attacks and they had the military at train stations, bus stations and public spaces. There were scanners for luggage and random airport style searches. It seemed to work fine. I'm thinking both countries have compulsory ID too but could be wrong.
I don't know how much it's continued in places like Milan, Paris and Nice. If anyone's been there recently?
The UK could have far more visible security force presence than it has. And it would seem relatively justified. However, thinking back to IRA bombing campaigns etc. I don't remember seeing much more presence on the streets. There were far more police on the beat as though, as far as I can remember. That's where police should be, in my opinion. Unless threatening life, social media investigations need to end or be handed over to someone other than the police. That cannot be any type of priority when there is a clear and constant risk to public safety from dangerous crime - or the perception of that at the very least.
All of the spurious duties the police have need to stop. There are so many things the police do that are not really useful for stopping crime. A lot is just easy enforcement for crime figures. Whilst worse criminals roam around almost at will. It's become more like the more dangerous you are, the more the police leave you - it feels like that anyway.

Yes, but according to the post earlier in this thread he travelled to London and back overnight, and was involved in incident there too. Possibly scoping out locations to do the crime.

I think you’re overthinking this.

He’s just an absolutely horrible piece of sh*t and not right in the head. A loner, unemployed and with f*ck all to do. Used to using public transport without a ticket and when the switch in his head got tripped he just boarded a train at his home station and launched the attack. He’d probably been building up to it but without the level of detailed planning you suggest.

In reality this sort of ‘not known to the authorities’ type is more of a concern than the planned attack where the police may have a chance to intercept the process.

Complain to the police and your MPs.

has that Train Attack been put into the memory-hole ? cos already we seem to have very little media coverage of the fallout ? Have the motivations, of the attacker, been discussed ? is this all statistically significant ? or just a random chance outlier ?
What would the media coverage look like if the shoe were on the other foot ?

I heard this s*** on a date. Black men don’t attack white men because of race. ‘’It’s about context’’ she said. Slightly patronising but more the fact she can’t back up her opinion and probably knows it’s BS. Over a week later I sent her a Guardian article with stats proving how wrong she is. She denied saying it. Many of them thing because they sound intelligent or they are in the group it means they are.
