Selling our best

I am so sick of the media putting out stories about our best players being ‘up for grabs’ or for sale. Munoz being the latest. I am very good friends with a football agent and he has proved to me just how pathetic the way that so called ‘journalists’ get news or so called big exclusives. The vast majority is complete dribble which is totally fabricated - trust me I have seen it first hand. For the first time is my entire life, Palace are right up there. We have won TWO domestic trophies in the space of 4 months and are embarking on a European Tour. I honestly dreamt of all of this growing up in the 70’s & 80’s. We all know every player has a price. But we must aim high and reach higher. It has never, ever been this good being an Eagle and long may it continue - but now it the time to invest and go for it rather than do our usual and cash in here and cthere. Come on Steve - you must take us take us to the next level and fly higher 🦅

We all love to dream and i get the sentiments from the post but ultimately our revenue turnover is not in the same ball park as the Cities, Liverpool and Arsenal's of the league so we are going to have to accept they will be able to offer our players larger salary's and chances to play in the champions league. It did though get me thinking which of our players you would swap with players in similar positions from other teams ? While every team in the world would want Haaland when you start to drill down the positions i could only come across a player or 2 out of the 19 other teams in the premier league ( the best league in the world ) that you might want as a possible step up on who we have at Palace.
Take goalkeeper for instance and there is Allison and Donarumma but after that i would say that Henderson is up there with the best of the rest. Similarly with Mateta after Haaland he is up there with the next group of players.
It just goes to show why we are winning trophies and doing so well.

Add in the manager as well.

One of my mates did a year or so out of Uni as a football journalist. And literally left because it was a total sham.

If everything was dead, they'd go 'fishing' on a Thursday, and put out a story e.g. Barca ready to swoop for Eagles' Munoz. They then could legitimately ask the manager about it in the Friday press conference.
Manager would either say something like 'Barca would be a dream move for most players and every player has his price', or 'we wouldn't sell him this window'.

Which then gives them a story for the Sat to run, with quotes. 'Glasner to clip Munoz's wings and deny him dream more to Barca.'

To your point.

I wouldn’t seek to defend journalists or agents, but it has to be acknowledged that Steve Parish has in the past touted Eze and Guehi in the media and said that Palace is not a ‘destination’ club for players but part of the journey for them.
The trick is for the club to sell the players at the right times and on the club’s own terms, which e.g Brighton has successfully done.

was he touting them or just being honest?

Both in my view.
Every player has his price and the skill is getting maximum value.
Brighton has done this continually, usually at the expense of Chelsea.
Cucurella signed by Brighton for @ £15 Mill, sold to Chelsea for a maximum of @ £65 Mill.
Caicedo signed for £4.5 Mill, sold to Chelsea for a maximum of £115 Mill.
Joao Pedro signed for £30 Mill sold to Chelsea for £60 Mill.
Apropos Sanchez I am unaware of the fee Brighton paid to Levante. Sold to Chelsea for £25 Mill.

Furthermore Brighton signed Mac Allister for £7 Mill, sold to Liverpool for a fee which could reach £55 Mill.

Sorry, that's not going to happen. He doesn't have a magic wand and the club simply don't have the resources to move to the next level overnight. It has to be the continuation of a gradual process.

We've come a long way since our return to the PL in 2013 by eventually being able to establish ourselves as an attractive option for quality young players looking for regular football in the PL with a view to moving on to bigger clubs. IMO, the likes of Eze, Olise, Guehi, Wharton (and I would suggest Canvot) wouldn't have come to us otherwise.

We have to enjoy such players whilst they're with us, knowing that the funds we get from selling them will enable us to strengthen our squad by attracting other quality youngsters and even the odd established quality player

But even this model won't last unless we increase our ground's capacity and even when the new stand is built we'll still be playing catch-up with most of the other clubs in the PL (and a few in the Championship).

Will we win the PL in my lifetime? Unlikely (I'm 74) but I'm enjoying our current journey which if managed well could see us really become an established PL club that can win the odd cup trophy or three.

Great post.

I share others' desire for 'more', I still think that is the whole essence of being a football fan.

Unfrotunately however, the reality (as given) has to play it's part.

Personally, my wishes are contained to keeping ahold of the majority while we can, perhaps adding the next Eze/Olise etc. and maybe, just maybe, more European football/domestic trophy success and a top half finish. Just writing that, it's a long way from 'not getting relegated' which was the extent of my wishes for near a decade.

Which, I suspect, lies at the heart of our business model.

Finish top of the "also rans" (Fulham, Brentford etc.) in 8th/9th + good cup run = good season.

The fans kept happy; and the bank even happier.

If we can progress higher we do it at glacial speed. Under the radar. Leicester's problem was they did it too much, too quick; and they were then asset stripped by the rich 6 who were not going to allow an interloper to break their hegemony.

Do you work at the BBC, you have put to different statements by Parish together to suit your agenda.

Unlike the BBC I haven’t spliced together material to give a particular impression.
I don’t have an agenda.

Parish is on record as saying that Palace are not ‘a destination club’ but instead one that can form part of a player’s journey to getting to such a club.
There’s nothing wrong with this, he’s being realistic.
Take a chill pill.

We’re not a destination club for the top players, but maybe we are for the likes of Hughes, Mitchell, Richards, Lacroix, Sarr, Henderson. Enough talent for a nice life for us in the PL.

Agreed.
Parish is talking of the exceptional talent which is coveted by the top clubs.
