As a young man in the 80s I hated him & Thatcher, being the awful Left wing bore that I was then.
Political views are not like footy teams, you can change them (being self employed sorted that for me)
If only we had him & T. now.
RIP Norman.

Gdp, inflation, interest rates, unemployment rates what's different apart from income tax which was 33% from memoryWell, stick around as you're probably going to get 'son of Thatcher' Farage in 28.
But personally I don't see it making that much difference......It's a different economic world with different power structures and dynamics.

Using IMF numbers 1980 is the earliest I can find our GDP was slightly less than France and now it's slightly more. I chose France as they are nearest and have similar population. The strength of the markets and banks in deciding monetary policy rather than the treasury.....Thatcher came in at a time where government policy still held sway over markets......But it didn't last that long with government finding that out on Black Wednesday all those years ago.
Demographics, immigration and its social cohesion is on a completely different scale.
The trading situation and power dynamics are now quite different to 79.
The UK’s public sector net debt was approximately 43.6% of GDP in 79 but as of December 2024 six months ago it was 98.1% of GDP. He can't sell state assets to raise billions like Thatcher did and nor does he have anything like the North Sea oil revenue.

Is that GDP per capita? The total number is somewhat meaninglessUsing IMF numbers 1980 is the earliest I can find our GDP was slightly less than France and now it's slightly more. I chose France as they are nearest and have similar population.

In an earlier post I think there was mention of productivity and France ranked higher. My point was our GDP was slightly higher with similar populations, so couldn’t work out how France was more productive? Is that GDP per capita? The total number is somewhat meaningless
Just checked , UK GDP is USD 6000 perhead more than France in 2024
Germany is about USD 7,000 more than UK, US is about USD 20,000 more

If he was still around he would join Reform. There is NO demise of the Conservative Party.
We have been rebuilding our party. After the General Election we faced hard truths and harder choices. We could have retreated into slogans. Instead, we chose to rebuild and do so with honesty, discipline, and optimism.
Apropos Norman Tebbitt, my admiration for the great man knows no bounds.

Nope. He would beat up Farage and lead Reform himself. If he was still around he would join Reform.
The right wing are a load of cut throat villains. It won't be just benefits pensions and the NHS will be slashed badly.Nope. He would beat up Farage and lead Reform himself.
First item on the Agenda. Cut all benefits from the Long-term unemployed.

The number of people on sickness benefits is growing and out of control. This happened in Labour before 2010. Claims started on the phone, encouraged to claim sickness for more money. The right wing are a load of cut throat villains. It won't be just benefits pensions and the NHS will be slashed badly.

And got on your bike so to speak.Heavens to Murgatroyd !
I am in profound disagreement with this accusation.
In any event, the subject of discussion is 'Norman Tebbitt' and I would hope the discussion centred around the great man whose opinions I shared. As someone once bellowed out at a Conservative garden event "You and Norman are 2 peas in a pod". I regarded this as a compliment.
RIP.
Well, Willo I have to say the changing to and from Reform does throw a dim light on loyalty, integrity and steadfastness, it is like a game of musical parliamentary chairs.Heavens to Murgatroyd !
