Nketiah Injured

Strikers and centre backs don’t need resting as they’re not running about as much as other positions.

To me Mateta looks gassed around the 70 minute mark of games. Hes played I think the full 90 in all of our games this season.

Last season he was subbed alot around the 70 min mark when nketiah wasn't injured.

Mateta works incredibly hard.
He often is in our own half as the first line of our defence and at the same time is the focal point of our attack, expected to hold the ball up, link play and get on the end of chances.
In this he is a very different kettle of fish to the static Benteke and Edouard.
It's no surprise that he's often shattered on around 70 minuntes.
Having Nketiah back will hopefully lessen Mateta's workload whether that's with Nketiah as a substitute for Mateta or occasionally joining him in attack.

I think Nketiah is especially good at doing all the pressure running to see out a game where we are ahead. So from 70 minutes just closing down angles with fresh legs is something I think adds value.

I am rubbish at remembering the details of games, but I think it was Nketiah that came on and did that in the FA Cup Final. Just ran around reducing passing options, rarely venturing into the opposition 1/3. I don't know if I would want to rely on him for goals (yet) but switching Mateta out for Nketiah when we're ahead on 70 can be really effective.

Nice finish at the end.

Missed an absolute sitter , header in the 6 yard box, from a greater Mateta cross.
They didn’t show it on motd. But needs to hit the target from there.

It was too far behind him, he was leaning back to get a glance on it.

Besides, even the best will miss chances, it’s still having confidence to tuck the next one away that matters.

The best we’ve ever had, Ian Wright might have missed a couple and/or be having a quiet game, then suddenly bang bang, a goal or two buried and he’s won us or Arsenal the game

Somebody called him the new Ayew, they meant it as a compliment. I think it is a valid point. Eddie plays for the team, we all hope he scores, but he does valuable work defending from the front.

Frankly, I don't think I'd rate Mateta as a clinical finisher either. Too often, when he gets clear, he shoots straight at the keeper rather than lobbing or weaving past.

He's always looked an awkward, gangly sort of player and he has scored some terrific goals for us, but he's missed some sitters too. His redeeming quality is his strength which he uses to great effect.
His linkup play is very good too and Mitchell hasn't nailed a cross like that in a thousand attempts. It's amazing that Mateta is so crucial to us but he could still improve. As you say he needs more variety in his finishing and he also scores few headers so it was good to see him getting one against west Ham

Ayew is up there as one of our greats. Eddie being called 'the new Ayew' is a huge amount of pressure on the young lad but a glowing compliment too. Let's hope so.

Mateta has shed more weight this season. He looks in great condition.
Nketiah is looking better than ever. Sharp skilful and plenty of running.
As you ve all said they should be sharing the front role and playing together.
Glasner will know his options and how to maximise these two. Looking forward to seeing it work, which it well.

Agree with all of this. It heartens me that fans are now looking back at Ayew positively as well.

I agree with centre backs, I very much disagree with strikers.

Playing as a lone striker in a pressing team, whilst trying to make good runs when we do get the ball is arguably the most running on the pitch. JPM has run himself into the ground after 70 mins most games.

As others have, he needs some rest time. Hopefully he’ll now get it if Eddie is fit.

My mate is a Leicester fan and has assured me the fans hate Ayew, who has now replaced Vardy as a lone striker. He may have some qualities, but a goal scorer isn't one of them.

He isn't one of our greats and an insult to those who are, he is just a average journeyman.

I agree I can’t believe anyone would think he was a ‘great’ player for us. He worked hard and we’ve had worse, but that’s about the best I can say
