England's Ashes squad: Ben Stokes (captain), Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook (vice-captain), Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Ollie Pope, Matthew Potts, Joe Root, Jamie Smith (wicketkeeper), Josh Tongue, Mark Wood.

I'm not excited by this squad.....aside from the obvious strong middle order and Duckett batting we have.

I can't see it winning or even staying fit bowling wise.

More interested in some of the Lions selections.

Should have picked better spinners. Pace bowlers are about the best England could pick. There is some genuine pace there. As far as I've seen, Ahmed is the better spinner and decent enough at batting. Don't fancy Jacks to bowl at all.
Hard, flat Aussie pitches that will break up on the fourth and last days will give spinners a major role.
Depending on how long the matches last for. I wonder how Aussies are handling their attack? Last I watched them I thought their pace attack was either aging or injured with little done about pace bowler succession. An element of that in their batting too.

The omission of Rehan Ahmed for Will Jacks is nuts.

He couldn't have done more to nail down a place.

I've not been a fan of these England selectors....Outside of the obvious picks.

They have a weird love affair with Zak Crawley that other batters would have given their right arm for.

Matthew Potts is a trier but he isn't going to pull up trees down under....he doesn't even pull up trees here.

Yeah, not good in my opinion.

Looking at that squad I am hoping for but not expecting three things:

1. This series is a break out series for at least two of the pace bowlers.
2. We bat second more often than not.
3. Most tests do not go longer than four days.

If these three things line up I think we have a real chance. If not we'll get slaughtered for many of the reasons others have said (weak spinners; bowling not great in these conditions; love affair with Crawley when the stats say otherwise; weak top order Duckett excepted).

Jacks is a one day bowler at best. Ahmed should be a future star and is already showing it. It's crazy.
He's hardly going to match up to Zampa (on poor form currently) or Lyons (old and injured) and neither are that good. I'm not asking for people to be Warnie but does Jacks even spin the ball? At best he's a lower order batsman who can spin a bit. At worst, he's there to be slogged. We've seen enough of Shoab now. I don't really want to see much more either.

Have you seen young Ralphie Albert? Far too young to be considered for this Ashes. He is a prospect for further down the line. Top scored yesterday for Surrey and his spin took two wickets for seven runs. His Grandad Is Snooker player Jimmy White so if we ever need a snooker he's your man.

"High release spinners" was the soundbite coming out of the England camp this week. To a degree I can see the logic given Australian pitches and likely conditions.

Part of me thinks they have looked at the series overall, seen one of the tests is a pink ball test where spin traditionally hasn't featured too much, and banked on pace to get us 20 wickets. Not an approach I'd take but time will tell.

Potts is one of those bowlers that needs to be continually bowling but has suffered from spending much of this season carrying drinks for the England team and not bowling at all leaving him dreadfully out of form.

Oddly enough for a Palace fan I am a Durham cricket supporter as I was living in the North East when they became a first class county and got caught up in all the razzamatazz.

On the same day that Palace thrashed Liverpool poor old Durham were relegated, mainly due to poor bowling performances during the season which is hardly surprising as Stokes, Carse and Potts have been systematically removed from the team to play for England

I suspect you may get Potts back more consistently next summer.
Carse I suspect does quite well on hard bouncy pitches like he'll find down under.
Stokes will probably retire at the end of the Ashes or maybe he'll stick it out for one more summer if not injured.

Haven't seen him but thanks for the heads up. I'll keep an eye out. Jimmy Shredsville China White.

Maybe I'm wrong but I honesty am more excited by the Lions squad than I am about the Ashes squad.
