Crystal Palace vs. Millwall match thread

That was a bad night at the office. But luckily a good end result.

If Pino had scored in the opening minutes then it may have been different.

But that was as disjointed a display as I can recall for some months now.

Esse....there was pressure on him to perform and he wasn't up to it. He seemed overwhelmed and nothing came off for him. Another harsh Glasner lesson for him. Although I advocated him staying and persevering in trying to play himself into the managers good books, his lack of confidence could hold him back. Although how much use a loan into the Championship would do him, I'm not so sure. A conundrum.

Regarding Esse's performance, I can excuse a few of the issue, taking a little too long on the ball and trying things that didn't come off.

But lets be honest, that could have been describing Pino. (Who wasn't great, but was working hard to be involved and make stuff happen)

What isn't excusable is:

Work rate, by the end of the half, he wasn't even trying to get involved. He wasn't showing any fight or desire. The bare minimum every week, but more surprising given how important this game was for him personally. Looks like he'd jsut accepted his fate.
Tactically awareness. He didn't seam to know when to press, and when to sit in. Mateta on a number of occasions was gesturing him to press. Defensively he never looked like he was in the right place and Munoz was often 2 on 1. He's had a good 9 months of working with this system.

Its clear that Deveny isn't technically as good as Esse (apart form set plays). But is miles ahead of him, because of work rate and technical application.

Some say he needs an arm round his shoulder etc, and needs to be protected. Which may be true, but he's clearly not helping himself. He's a professional athlete and whilst young, needs to show some desire and try to impact the game.

Its hard to see where he goes from here, he's not now going to be brought on if we are chasing a goal. His only hope of minutes is if we are 3-0 up.

By way of context, although you'd never know it from the Esse only headlines, Glasner gave a broader appraisal of the lacklustre performance.
He pointed out that in the first half the front 3 lost '80% of their duels, ' meaning their was little platform to build moves in Millwall's half.
He also said that the attacking component of the team, namely the 2 wing backs and front 3, had not even had one training session together meaning there was no opportunity to build an understanding of each other's game.
He contrasted this with the move that led to the missed Mateta chance at the end when Kamada, Munoz and Mateta linked as they had extensive experience of the playing patterns to create the opportunity.
On Esse, Glasner said, 'I'm not a priest, Im here to win football matches,' and indicated that the sole criteria for selecting Eze will be determined by whether Glasner believes that Esse can help him in that objective.

Devenny has improved massively in the last year. He’s a lot better technically than he gets credit for and as you say his work rate is excellent. Glasner has improved him but hasn’t yet had similar success with Esse. He was woeful last night and got worse as the half went on. It’s as if he knew he’d blown his chance and lost both his confidence which was pretty fragile anyway, and his focus. Subbing him at halftime was a kindness. Sadly that points to a deeper issue with his mentality which may not be fixed by playing first team football and certainly not by sitting on the bench. On the plus side he’s still only 20. He might be better served and more useful playing for the under21s for a season.

It did look on tv like mateta's right foot does slip a tad which makes him stretch with his left.

Only got 2 goals from open play though since netting at home v the weed.
Fair play to him though he stepped up for his penalty shortly after and put it away nicely when that miss must've been on his mind.

And easy to forget Devenny is still only 21. He's not going to be a starter much this season, but will get plenty of minutes. Always gives it his all, and could play him in a couple of positions.

We now have had two penalty shootouts. Devenny and Mateta with the same penalties.

Interesting if we end up in another shootout which is very possible will they change it up?

They might but why change a winning hand - if it's hit high into the side netting, particularly at pace, it's very hard to save. Have to say Devenny takes a hell of a penalty.

As Esse is not responding too the manager then one of the older team members should try and find out what the problem is. He is not short of ability but has zero confidence / self belief, some one at the club needs to find out why that is and see what the way forward can be.

Lucky to get a lift home from a mate last night and actually be able to get a decent 7 hours sleep before work. Being held at Norwood junction that late at night would have given me the f*cking hump. Hopefully no one missed last trains home and if so the met police are a complete and utter joke. On another note, it’s quite funny how much our fan base shrinks when we play Millwall. just a load of mouthy teenagers and fat bald geezas with the lowest average IQ of any fanbase in the country.

Some times it takes a different approach. I am well aware of the support they can get if the need it but it appears that he may not be responding so we need to look out of the box.
