Crystal Palace vs. Millwall match thread

Pro football is a very tough world.
Esse was way out of his depth last night.
Glasner did the right thing subbing him.
Personally, I will be very surprised if he ever makes it at Prem level.
Same goes for JRS and most of our youngsters at the academy.
The premier is a completely different world.
Not forgetting last night Millwall are mid table 2nd tier which anyway is huge drop down from the Prem.
Its why Glasner keeps banging on about having such a small squad.
I said exactly the same last night. He just ain't good enough unfortunately.

Ease can play better than that. We all know it’s a big step up for a young lad from the the championship to the prem. if he had put that performance In still playing at Millwall even they would have taken him off.

Can’t believe fans are writing off Esse already. He showed against Wolves what he can do, he has talent. He looks short of confidence which came across as bar one piece of lovely skill nothing was happening for him and then ended up being knocked off the ball too easily.

He is only young and looks like he needs arm round his shoulder and build his confidence

Fair comment.

Doesn't look good for Esse
Fair points, think as fans we all felt he needed replacing at half time. Managers hardly do that though, so credit to Glasner. As for the team performance, we looked awful when in space with the ball and passed the ball terribly. Totally different in the prem where we don’t get any space and pass the ball quicker and shorter most of the time. No excuse for the miss by Mateta at the end though. Thank goodness Millwall’s penalties were poor compared to ours. In the hat 🙂

Gm round his shoulder and build his confidence
'I am not here to single out a player' - OG

But I'll do it anyway.

And look at JP's reaction. First time I think I have ever seen him looking so down. True team player. Inspiration to us all.

I do like Glasner as our Manager and probably our best Manager ever, but i have to question his man management of Esse and not just last night . He is singling out the poor chap for a bad performance when most of the team didnt exactly set the world alight in the first half . Maybe its an attitude problem i dont know or maybe a diva thing. If its a case of not following orders or not having the ability then he needs to move on . With my experience of working and guidance of younger people i have realized that they are delicate little flowers and the harder you are on them the more they will push back . you have to spend more time encouraging them rather that berating them in public . Hey just my opinion you know what they say , you catch more flies with honey than vinegar.

Mateta has been too far forward this season, he needs to come back deep again, link play up with the 10s running off him.
You can do this with Sarr in the number 10 role running off Mateta , but not with Kamada, Wharton and perhaps Pino too.
They are inclined to run back towards the ball and link play rather than run in behind as Sarr does.
I'm hoping Uche will be able to do this too as we need more options.

With regard to Esse it was evident how often he was second to the ball yesterday.
It's often said that the first yard in football is played in the head and that's where anticipation and body positioning is so key.
I doubt very much that Hughes would beat Esse in a foot race, but he often gets to the ball first under challenge because he's read the movement of the ball enabling him to win his duel and emerge clear.
Wharton is another player who demonstrates this anticipation, but I'm not sure that it's a skill you can learn.

Playing in the prem is a big step up but he was playing against a mid-table championship team though. He just wasn't doing the basics like going to the ball rather than waiting for it to go to him.

I just hope he hasn't got an attitude problem cos it won't go down well with ollie. He's already been subbed as a sub after a few minutes for not following orders.

It did look on tv like mateta's right foot does slip a tad which makes him stretch with his left.

Only got 2 goals from open play though since netting at home v the weed.
