I wanted to give him a mention.

Since Trev went back to Chelsea and Richards came back into the team, I think he has been outstanding and doesn’t really get too much praise. Then,a wins everything thrown into our box and works really well with Munoz, covering when he goes on a forest gump run up the wing.

I know MG and ML get lots of attention but I think Richards is up there with them both in terms of defending (with Mark being just a better all round and smoother footballer).

What are people’s thoughts?

He has been splendid and goes 'Under the radar'.
He is a vital component in our defence.
He cost a sum up to £11 Mill, a pittance in PL terms.
Salutations to Chris Richards. 👍

I have rated him for some time, he put a decent shift in as a defensive midfielder when needed and, after doing well in Glasner’s first season, I thought he was a bit unlucky to miss out to Chalobah.

Has been excellent ever since. In most eras he would have been our best defender.

Good post. In the air he is the best of the back three I am sure of that, maybe someone has the stats. Excellent member of the back 3 and a lovable guy. Yet another quality player both on and off the pitch to add to the team spirit

In the early days I'd labelled him a bit of a sick note, but he's come on leaps and bounds. Very consistent and great in the air.
We have one of the best back lines and I could see all 3 appearing in the World Cup.

Vital part of the back line, and is improving all the time.

He's not the quickest, but makes contact early to stop attackers getting the run on him. (which mitigates his weakness)

A hard working no nonsense centre back who is easily the best of the three in the air. Remember how vulnerable we used to be at corners. He is key to how we defend set pieces. He’s not going to walk the ball out of defence like Marc or hit long passes like Maxence. He does go under the radar as does Maxence because of all the drama surrounding Marc and I for one am happy about that if it means we keep them both for next season when hopefully Riad is back in the side.

I watched the Sunderland game with my son on Saturday, and we both agreed Chris was MOTM. He blocked everything and is virtually unbeatable in the air.

Also agree with the comment on what great value he was.

It's hard to find a better back 3 in the premier league than ours.

I agree with you that he's been immense for us at the back, especially in the air.

However, don't expect him to find midfield skills because that's not his thing by any stretch of the imagination: win the challenge, then play the simple ball to a colleague.

Agree above.

The 3 bond seamlessly; could be the best settled defence in the league; and could also be the main cause of our success.

The fact that Lerma slips so easily into that Holy Trinity when there is injury gives hope that Glasner can drill any good quality newcomer into that unit.

Yup. OG has virtually said as much himself.

He cost about £10 from Bayern. Another bargain. Like a couple of others (JPM) he took a while to adapt to the Premier League but is now a quality centre half. I like the fact he does what he does very well and focusses on that. Not the most technically gifted but where as he used to be a bit of a liability with his passing he has improved a lot on that side of his game.

Daddyorc started a Chris Richards thread last year which fizzled out after just a few posts, and I seem to recall a fair number of negative comments about him in his early days, mainly because Roy played him out of position.

The fact that this is the second thread to bear his name speaks volumes about the impact he is having, and about Ollie's ability to see a player's strengths. I like him because he really wants to make a contribution, you can see it in his general enthusiasm for the game. He makes plenty of useful tackles and blocks in the area and his height helps him win numerous aerial battles.

Richards is also now coming to the fore with his ability to take the fashionable long throw. There's little doubt he's one of our key players and easily makes it onto the team sheet.
