Who should get a new contract?

Assuming Guehi won’t sign a new deal who are our priorities? Lerma ana Kamada are in their final year as are Clyne and Ahamada though these 2 are probably good to go. The following year it’s half the first team, but who should we tie down now?

Of those due in June 2026:
  • I'd offer a deal to Lerma. He'll be 31 next month, so I'd offer him a 1 year extension with a further year option at the club's discretion.
  • As for Kamada, he'll turn 30 at the beginning of next season. I'd want to see how Yeremy and Uche settle in the no 10 roles and whether Esse knuckles down and earns Glasner's trust. If all 3 are positives then I'm not sure we'll need Kamada for the no 10 role. However, if it's looking like Wharton will leave, then it might be worthwhile offering Kamada a year extension with a further year option assuming he shows a decent consistent level this season
  • I would expect the other 2 to be released.
Of those due in June 2027:
  • I'd offer extensions to Hughes (who'll be 32) for 1 further year; Richards until June 2030 (when he'll be 30): Mitchell until June 2029 (when he'll be 30); and assuming he continues to develop, Devenny until 2032 (when he'll be nearly 29).
  • As for Mateta, he'll be 30 when his current contract expires. The club needs to decide whether or not to cash in on him next Summer. If not and he's happy to sign a new contract then I'd give him a 2 year extension.
  • I'd be inclined to let Matthews go and possibly Whitworth if he's not deemed to be PL material. I would also release JRS but I suspect we'll have offloaded him before then.

I'd agree with all of that (except Kamada, he's a CM, and at present Whartons partner, he needs a new contract IMO).

Also agree with getting the other extensions in early. Need to avoid important players getting into the last year or so of their contracts. So if they are important, lets start the conversations early.

just a few years ago we had the most elderly squad in this league.

must not repeat that mistake. We need youth and pace.

hence, i would be reluctant to give a new contract to Clyne. Great football brain, not sure about the legs anymore.
I was singing the praises for Devenney when he scored for NI. Then he made a defensive error that cost them a goal....in the subsequent match. So, needs to improve if he is to become top drawer.

Once they hit 30, move them on regardless of who they are, except Glasner.

Contracts to likes of Clyne and in the past Ward are strategic from the club. We haven’t the money for wholesale changes each summer and buying youth and pace is costly. Clyne may get another year but IMO could be replaced by Imray or Kporha if they think good enough

Agree about Whitworth, not sure about Mathews, he's ideal as a 3rd 'keeper. I think another 2yr contract would be right, let's face it, who want's to be a 3rd 'keeper, but, we are required to have one.

Can we while we play in the Euro Conf?

I don’t agree with this as a blanket rule.

I wouldn’t want a large section of the squad to be ageing but if someone is doing a good job, wages are good enough value and we don’t get the right offer there is a benefit of experience to support the youth.
