Was it all worth it?

Not just all the Brits who fought for Britain. But also spare a thought for the enormous numbers of non-Brits who fought for the UK, to keep it free. Ghurka's, Australians, Jamaicans....and lots of other places.
In 1939, people were told England would be invaded by a ton of hostile foreign men. Men hell-bent on taking the housing stock and the genetic future of the nation. Men refusing to speak English but seeking to dominate and control us. So everybody galvanised. Determined to stop the invasion.....both British men and friendly foreign men from the Empire. United under the English language and the British Flag. As much as it was a military War, it was also Cultural. To protect and preserve an old British identity.

What did the WWII heroes achieve ? well, you don't hear much German spoken in Thornton Heath today. And smell none of that foreign German food. Nor hear anybody doing religious worship in German. Nor 1,000 live births with much of a statistical German signature. Nor witness people wearing Lederhosen or other German attire. Nor any shops blaring that foreign music.

In my memory teachers usually needed a reason to clout someone (apart from the psycho ones) whereas games teachers just lashed out in all directions. It was still the best lesson of the week though.
I’ve got to be honest, I gave them plenty of reason, It was the slipper on the palm of my hand from the headmaster that made my eyes water a bit 🥲🤣
But when I left school, I didn’t end up a drug admit, a mugger or a thief and I didn’t end up in prison. Maybe if teachers now were allowed to unleash the same painful discipline we went through they’d be less young scum reaking havoc on the streets

These days if a teacher looks at a pupil wrong or doesn't go along with their mental illness and calls them the "wrong pronoun" they are suspended / cancelled or fired.

in the past, teachers taught. And laid down the Law.

Today ....they entertain, they turn a blind eye, they are more like a Butlin's redcoat. They take their paycheque and do as the bosses request. Teachers Sitting, at a graduation ceremony, under rainbow & Palestine flags.....probably off their t1.ts on xanex - and during all the speeches they wonder if Mateta will get a shot on target.

was it all worth it ? UK, USA, France, ..... all a mess. The so-called Victors ?

The country most devastated in WWII.....Neutral Poland. Yet today ? sitting Pretty.

Here is an intellectual thought-experiment : Imagine if Hitler invaded Poland and Neville Chamberlain replied...."nothing to do with me". Then certainly Russia would have fallen, probably fairly quickly. Therefore its unlikely the USA would have entered the European Theatre.
No Soviet Union. No Cold War. Maybe no Vlad Putin today.

We need to wake up to reality, stop complaining or thinking we can turn the clock back.

Britain today is impacted by our Empire just as it was when we grew rich from it. Our forefathers profitted, but it was unsustainable. There was no way we could continue to control India, or any other nation wanting independence.

Now we must live without those riches but the peoples of those countries inherited their legal, education and government systems from us. The ties still exist. Many still think of England as their spiritual home and want to escape relative poverty by coming here. Many also believe we owe them for what we took.

At the time of the last census 16% of our residents were born abroad. 60% of them coming from countries previously part of our Empire.

Britain has changed and will continue to change. Being British isn’t the same now as it was for my parents, but it’s still being British. We went to the Empire and called them British. Now the Empire is coming to us, but some of us don’t want to call them British.

We are all part of the same story, but just in another chapter of it. We can choose to be unhappy about that or accept it’s inevitability and get the best from it.

Without the riches of the Empire flowing to our shores it’s difficult to see where we have many unique attributes that we can build something on. Especially when we seem determined to belittle our national treasures. Leaving the EU was a crazy decision which I sincerely hope a future UK government has the courage to rescind. That’s where our future lies. Not in our past.
