The manager roundabout

I’m as pissed off as everyone on here about how we are playing at the moment. The system, lack of goals etc.

There is a very real possibility that we will be without a win and out of a cup we all wanted a run in come the time of the wolves game. The wolves game I see as OGs Alamo. Without a win against them I think the plug gets pulled. A win there and I believe we will get the spark to get something against a very good and on the up Fulham side.

However. There is an absolute pattern to Palace. We all so desperately want a side that plays good attacking football. Much like the golden period at the end of last season.
The problem as I see it is that our club just cannot or will not fend off offers for our players when we start to look good. After we nearly went bust there is no way that SP and the board are not going to balance the books.

This means we will always be somewhere between a Glasner and a Roy. A forward thinking progressive manager and a firefighter. A young up and coming manager or a Moyes etc.

Look at the situation we are in. Make no mistake, we are in a fight now. Confidence is shot, players heads are down, everybody is looking around for somebody or something to light the spark of last year. Is it the manager? I’m not sure but other than Hughes I don’t see a leader on the pitch at all.

What we do all know is that Parish and co will not allow us to go down. It won’t happen under this watch. What will happen is we will go back to a pragmatic manager and very quickly stabilise and we will all be glad of a few solid displays and 1-0 wins and we will climb to our normal perch. Then we will all start moaning about the dull ‘RoyBall or more likely ‘Moyesball’ ‘Potterball’ or dare is say ‘gazzaball’ that we will be watching and the golden 7 games of last season will be like some mythical legend that we are not sure really happened where every time we went forward we looked like scoring.

Do we stop this cycle. Stick with OG and see what happens? I just can’t see it happening, too much money is at stake. For it to happen, the next squad that clicks, there can be so sell on clauses, no passing through Palace on your way to a bigger club (you don’t see Brighton, Bournemouth or even Forest now saying this sort of s***). We either build something special or we just rinse and repeat the last 10 years… which let’s face it has been more consistently successful than any period we have had in my lifetime.

Good post. Throw in the myth that is the ground improvement. That’s what sets us apart from Brighton Forest Leicester etc they have built it we haven’t.

No idea how they work out these figures and you'd think some clubs from outside Europe would feature (Saudi for instance but maybe spending power isn't among the criteria) but according to Transfermarkt Palace are the 11th most valuable club in the Premier League and 25th most valuable in the world. Whether these figures are totally accurate or not we're not total minnows.

Excellent post.

I'm an advocate of having a 'transfer window' for managers as well as players. It forces clubs to have the Courage of their convictions and gives the manager the security that he wont get fired within the month, and that he has a decent amount of time to implement his ideas.
I understand that there are differences between a manager and a player - you can't simply Bench a manager if he's not performing and the financial implications of relegation are such that a change in manager is more effective way of turning a teams fortunes around than a change in playing staff, but the volatility of the idea that you can sack a manager whenever it suits is detrimental in my book.
I'd rather the club have faith in the manager, give him time to implement his ideas. If everyone knew that the Manager is here for the season regardless (or maybe til Jan) then everyone (incl. fans, players and senior management) would have to accept that and in my view this would help them galvanise and work through the problems.

So I vote to keep OG til at least January.

There are a couple of problems with this. What if you have a character issue with the manager? It could still happen with this rule. And obviously there’s always going to be 3 teams at the bottom. This rule would mean we’d have been stuck with Holloway and likely been relegated with just one and no 11 seasons in the premier league.

Yes It isn't without it's problems, and that's why it's unlikely to happen, but if a reasonable solution can be found to them......
Allowing the manager to walk away, could be one exception, but then all that'll happen is all manager sackings will be the manager 'walking away'! Perhaps the caveat to that is that you cannot employ a permanent manager until The window opens, but there's loopholes to that too. 🤔

Since we came back to the premiership 2013/14 theses are the managers i rated in order (more than 5 games)
1 Pulis 42.86 Win%
2 Pardew 40.23
3 Hodgson 32.67
4 Allardyce 37.50
5 Glasner 40.91 Currently
6 Vieira 29.73
7 Holloway 1 win 7 losses in 8 premiership games
DeBoer too few games to judge

I kind of agree, but think it's much more of a simple problem at its core. I believe there's an issue or two in the squad. Some kind of gripe/ squabble. My opinion is that it centers on Mateta wanting a new contract, Eze going to leave, Olise leaving and Guehi going to leave. We can't renew player's contracts without some kind of release clause and they all want to go somewhere else. Maybe there was no dealing with Olise, maybe there was.
I genuinely wonder what we could have offered. I think Mateta cottoned on and won't let it go.
There are classic signs of a divided squad. Look how Mateta busted a gut for France in the Olympics. Look at him now. In my opinion, completely unacceptable - but was it avoidable? Iny opinion, yes, if we weren't so f***ing small time amateurish.

I agree, why can’t we have consistency like Brentford. How do they keep hold of Thomas Frank after what he has done for them. After the last seven games of last season there were rumours of other clubs coming for OG.When they lose a top player they don’t suddenly stop playing the way that has made them successful and generally replace players like for like and seem to go on seamlessly. Why can’t we have more than a couple of months of enjoying attractive hi intensity on the front foot football without it all going pear shaped?

I agree Ripley. Bournemouth are another club that have bypassed us. IMO Olise leaving was out of our control. With the money buy Smith-Rowe and Sarr. Keep Andersen and Ayew. Less upheaval and carry on. Far too many changes for me.

Mateta has got some nerve if any of this is true seeing as he’s only really performed for 2 months in his whole time at Palace.

When you say you believe there an issue or two in the squad, have you heard something or is it a hunch you have? You then say it’s your opinion that it centres on Mateta wanting a new contract and there’s a divide in the squad.

There were the odd media reports which needed reading between the lines. Two were about Andersen not being happy with what he was offered, then Mateta wanting a move to Villa - 45 mil - or a massive contract. Add in Glasner dropping Mateta - and Mateta not kicking the flag (not that I care if he does or not). Mateta clearly sulking - he hasn't really hidden it. And that Mateta and Olise, plus Édouard being the French Vieira mates - what's happened now. Édouard off, Olise off and Mateta not at the heart of any French cabal. Then we got Lacroix - was that anything to do with this? Another French mate to shut Mateta up?
Then look at the pitch, lack of effort, lack of trust in team mates, lack of everything Palace more or less. I can't help but add 2 and 2 together and make 4. It's staring us in the face. But it is more of an opinion than any inside knowledge.

You're right about reports, they increased when he got picked for the French Olympic squad & then even more when he was top scorer.

Agree with much of what you've said and I too am fearful that if Glasner leaves, we'll be back to a 'safe' manager, probably Moyes or Southgate.

The problem is that, at the moment, we're not playing expansive, progressive football. That attacking verve from last season has complete gone. Obviously Olise leaving has hurt us but it can't explain the performance levels of every other player reaching such lows.

I actually think Andersen going has been worse for us because our inability to get out from defence now is shocking to watch. It's like our three CBs can't pass between them and every clearance just comes right back.

Really Glasner needs to throw caution to the wind and just attack, attack, attack. We're the lowest scorers in the league so something has to give.

I'd try and get as close to last season's front three as possible, with Eze and Sarr playing behind Mateta. Sarr is obviously nowhere near Olise's level but I think he's the closest in style.
