The ancient Roots of Football

It is perhaps surprising what a low profile is given to this. How little coverage in the public domain. Our TV & cinema are saturated with military history, political history and all that. 1861 is on our radar because there was A club called Crystal Palace that went down into the history of the FA cup, if i recall correctly.
This thread is really about going back much further than that.
The first series of Wolf Hall had a good depiction of some lads having a kick-about , during the reign of Henry Vii no less. There is evidence of village versus village sports during medieval times. Often with hundreds of participants, often an extremely violent affair. With a rather relaxed attitude towards rules and fair play. The 'pitch' was often many miles long and over ditches & streams. To our eyes, the sport may have resembled a composite of Soccer, Rugby, Gaelic Football, and MMA. There was certainly no VAR to measure if a fella was three millimeters offside.......and probably even no offside rule.

The Romans invented the stadium sports-spectacle. Then Christianity killed off all their cruel bloody sports. Opening up the way for the modern game.

There are many parallels to football from other times and places. Some are linked below. Hurling is believed to be three thousand years old. So please exchange some links, sources, or opinions.

Maybe one reason the Latin Americans produce so many brilliant players : its in three thousand years of their DNA. All the shyte players got the chop.

Much is known of the medieval Tournament with jousting - for the aristocracy. And so little is known about the sports of the peasants. So please share some stories, sources or anecdotes.
