Planned Early Summer Spending

It's a little quiet, so let me be controversial and suggest that the club has already done its planned early summer business, namely:
  • a No 2 keeper = Benitez
  • a long-needed LWB to challenge or as back-up for Mitchell = Sosa
Glasner is on record as wanting to work with a small 1st team squad.

The current squad comprises:
  • 3 keepers = Henderson, Benitez and Matthews
  • 5 CBs = Guehi, Lacroix, Richards, Riad and Holding
  • 3 RB/RWB = Munoz, Clyne and Kporha
  • 2 LB/LWBs = Mitchell and Sosa
  • 8 midfielders = Wharton, Kamada, Hughes, Lerma, Doucoure, Devenny, Ahamada and Ozoh
  • 5 no 10s/wingers = Eze, Sarr, Esse, França and Rak-Sakyi
  • 3 strikers = Mateta, Nketiah and Edouard.
That's a total of 29 players.

We also have a couple of Academy players (Adamarola and Agbinone) who have had brief cameos for the 1st team.

Any other incomings during this window may be dependent on outgoings.

We might say, "well we've got some dead wood to shift - Edouard, Ahamada and Holding" but until we shift them they're part of the available squad.

Yes, I know we will be playing in Europe, but a club of our size and with our limited resources can't afford to have a bloated squad just in case.

Not controversial at all DB, quite a good assessment in all honesty. You know what football fans are like, they always want more/better players, me included. I hope that with the rigours of European Football next season, we will need all our squad & hopefully, give some time to some of our more promising youngsters, Mustapha springs to mind.

I personally think, this UEFA/CAS business has put the kibosh on any meaningful transfers, tho, if we are in good health come the January window, ie looking like we will qualify for the knockout phase of whichever euro comp we are in, we might dip our toes in then. Injuries, of course will always play a part & alter any plans we may have.

Good piece btw.

Couldn't agree more Doombear.

The squad is pretty well rounded, as you mentioned Edouard, Ahamada and Holding need to go. And Rak-Sakyi and Ozoh might need loans.

Given the above, as we stand I still think we need to look at:

Center Back: Riad is out until the NY, and might take a few months even then. Unless OG thinks Ozoh can step up at CM, or he is happy with Lerma/Clyne filling in, I think we need another.

Attacker: We have a very clear starting 3, and whilst Esse, França & Nketiah can do a job for a bit (hopefully). I still think we need a more ready replacement. My suggestion would be Evann Guessand.

Naturally the club will also be thinking about Eze/MG/JP replacements, but only to activate if needed.

The only other thing to thinks about in all of this is injuries. It seams pretty common to end up with 2 players out for most of the season.

I would be very happy to start with that 29, Lerma and Clyne can also play CD, if we buy one player i hope its Emanuel Emegha from Strasbourg.

A number of posters have expressed concern that Glasner might walk because we haven't done our business early. I'm suggesting that Glasner will be happy if we can keep what we now have. Unlike last summer, we have a settled squad with just 2 1st team squad players having left (and they were squad players - Ward and Schlupp). With just 2 new players we have a squad that is well attuned to Glasner's system and tactics so unless we lose several key players, we should be able to start the new season ready to roll.

I'm not suggesting that we won't buy any more players before the end of the window, only that we've done the necessary business early.

Glasner will see how the fringe and Academy players perform in pre-season before the club decides what to do with them with regard to loan and/or 1st team cover. Let's not forget we paid significant money for both Franca and Esse and although they rarely featured last season, I would expect them to be an integral part of the 1st team squad this season, quite possibly starting in most of the cup games of which we hope there'll be many.

I suppose one question we could ask ourselves is: which of our cup winning players would we want to replace? To be honest, with our finances, I don't see us upgrading on any of them provided Kamada continues to improve.

Agreed but sadly now injured and out for at least 6 weeks according to The Athletic.

If our spending is done then our Directors have trousered a lot of money. 12th place money, FA Cup money, charity Shield (which is no longer a charity game) and then you have the players who have retired or moved on. Currently it is a smaller squad than last year and that wasn’t a full squad.

Make no mistake, we need bodies through the door.

Well, we got £15.5m for finishing 12th, £1.8m for winning the FA Cup, we had a declared squad of 25 & we don't get anything for the Community Shield.

I wouldn’t be surprised if another one or two came in, but as long as we keep the set we have it’s not urgent. The situation with UEFA can,t have helped, and we don’t so much need more as better quality, make space by getting rid of the senior loan outs from last year and up grade would be my wish. Doombears premise is right enough , we will be OK if things stay as they are.

Jeez, it’s not our our total income is it? This is the unaccounted for income that you couldn’t rely on at season start. Our current squad is just about good enough to keep us in a similar league position.

I guess you’re happy with the squad because I’m not. We are desperately thin on the ground in a number of positions and if we sell 2 senior players as suspected then they have to be replaced with quality replacements otherwise I can’t see us competing in Europe at whatever level we end up at.

I agree with you on the 2 senior players & Euopean concerns. No, that is not the total amount the club earned as tv & sponsorship we not included.

Yes obviously any key player would need to be replaced with the money received, a season loan to buy for a CD be would good, and Davide Calabria i expect to sign on a free, Muñoz cover

Far too sensible for here!

We dont need much, the market will start to pick up in the next couple of weeks.

We can only have 25 senior players in the squad. Any other "bodies through the door" are going to have to be inexperienced youngsters, or a waste of financial resources.
