He's most effective as a poacher striker and has struggled as a no 10. Unfortunately, as things stand, he's no 3 on the striker list after Mateta and Strand Larsen. Unless Mateta leaves, I don't see Nketiah getting many minutes. The fact we were prepared to sell him to Spammers in January points to an exit if he can maintain his fitness.

I agree, but just think with a new manager he might be given more opportunities (albeit maybe more in the cups than in the Prem)

The problem I see, is that strikers need confidence to be at their best and this comes with regular game time. I will be surprised if Nketiah gets this. He has taken advantage of Mateta and Strand Larsen being at the World Cup to show Sage what he can do, but I'm sure Sage will be using both Mateta and Strand Larsen as soon as they're up to speed after their break.
I expect Nketiah to get minutes tonight and next week and possibly even in the Everton game, but if Mateta stays (which is a growing rumour) Nketiah could find himself not even on the bench unless he can persuade Sage that he can do a job as a no 10. I say that because I would expect the manager to fill his bench with the back-up players for each position. Putting Nketiah on the bench as the 3rd striker seems no different to putting Matthews on as the 3rd keeper i.e., a waste of a sub place.

The Como Cup games were semi competitive training sessions - yes I suppose Eddie did ok but he's not the type of player to hold the line nor a number 10 so how is Sage going to use him? Super sub?

I’ve always liked him, it’s just a shame he suffers from a bit of the Dwight Gayle’s, as in his a poacher type goal scorer that just doesn’t seem to fit into the modern game of teams who play with the one striker, usually a more centre forward type work horse.
Bunging him on when we need a goal and playing him out wide is killing him for us, but what can you do? He’s never going to play regularly through the middle on his own, if he does he looks like a little boy lost

Agree. He was a bad buy. Why buy a 5ft 10 striker , who can’t hold the ball up, when we only play 1 up front.

Yes at least we can rotate mateta and strand Larsen in the same formation if JP stays.
I hate to say it, Johnson has been poor, but at least you could see why we bought him, he fit into our formation

I'd rather see Drakes-Thomas or Franca on the left because at least they play in those positions but I'd expect the two 10s to be Sarr and last chance Johnson.

I think he'll get a better chance this year, if only because I expect Mateta to be sold. He's then competing with Larsen for one spot.
Whether Nketiah is suited to playing as a lone centre forward is certainly relevant. It seemed like he had no chance to be first choice under Glasner as he preferred a big target man. In fairness, I wonder if that's true. Mateta did well for Glasner from day one, and by the time Nketiah arrived the team had been built around Mateta to some degree. There was certainly no reason to change things. Perhaps if Nketiah had been at the club instead of Mateta when Glasner arrived, he'd have taken off.
As much as I'm sure he'd prefer to play alongside Mateta in an old school system, I certainly don't think Nketiah can't play up top by himself. Most teams play one forward, and not many of them are big lads. We would have to play differently, though.

I had similar thoughts about Nketiah and how he may be used under Sage.
It's possible that Sage will have a different idea to Glasner as to the role of the striker ( providing he scores).
My main issue with Nketiah is his inability to stay fit.
I could see him scoring in a couple of consecutive games and then missing 6 games with a hamstring injury.
You can't rely on him even playing a 20 plus game season.

We start the season in 4 comps, 3 good strikers will all get plenty of time hopefully

Well, yes, or each will be rotated so that none of them gets a consistent run in the team to build up form, sharpness, confidence, and an understanding with team mates.
That's a common theme in modern football. There are so many potentially good players who never achieve lift off because they only play a percentage of the games and, for that matter, of each game.
Look at Eze , Olise, Guehi, Lacroix, and Wharton. They developed because they mostly played each and every minute they were fit to play. That's the benefit of signing for palace instead of Chelsea. I feel like Nketiah needs that, like all players do, if he's to kick on.
I think if he remains one of three, always in and out, subbed on or off, then he'll be the same frustrating hit and miss player this time next year.
Of course, it's up to him to make himself first choice no9. He has to s*** or get off the pot. I just don't think a rotation system develops players at all.
You're with Glasner there with the last sentence. All history now though; we are all wondering about how the new dawn will pan out

I thought he did his job well in the FA Cup Final, did exactly what I suspect he was told to do.
But not sure how often that type of football would come up in the league season.
