How about all the people who have tackled violent crime & terrorism on our streets ? literally putting their own lives on the line ? did they get a medal ?

Like that woman police officer who got her nose broke at Manchester airport ?

Gareth and Sadiq are 2 names I’ll never prefix with Sir

Sir Sadiq. A knight. What is the history of the knight ? as an institution ? Not exactly going to wear the cross and ride off to liberate Jerusalem from the infidel ? Will Sir Sadiq be visiting the Temple to pay his respects to the heroes buried there ? the other Sirs.

A knight in England was pretty much anyone who could prove having two pounds or more yearly income from their land. I suppose later it was a bit like those who did not need to work the land themselves: gentleman as such. Which, for Irish history, explains that property qualification there was for voting in O'Connell's days. 40 shillings freehold - 2 pounds.
Once you could establish your income, you applied to the Crown to have your heraldry recognised. You would then have the rank of Knight but also the duties of a knight. A knight would need to be able to provide a certain amount of liveried men for Royal armies as requested.

Albeit from the bbc, it also lists 4 of the wrongfully accused postmasters/mistresses in the PO/Horizon IT scandal(you need to scroll down). The general public aren't really interested in 'Joe Public' getting gongs, but, they are interested in 'famous' people, it's the nature of the beast.

The Honours system was already critically damaged by Sir Jimmy Savile. Now it's just a running joke of already well-paid people, getting a medal for their work.
Stephen Fry did more for football in his time with Norwich (as a shareholder), than Gareth (I'll do whatever the FA want) Southgate.

The only crumb of comfort is that once again David Beckham manages to swerve the elusive Knighthood. 😀

He must be thinking why not? Every other celeb or sports person gets one. LOL 😀

Once we got our independence, we got shot of 'sirs' and other titles. It was probably a backlash to a few hundred years of Sir Humphreys bossing us around.

"The Constitution of Ireland mandates that "Titles of nobility shall not be conferred by the State".

I think it might be a Republican idea that all are equal in the eyes of the State. However Republican France does bestow 'chevalier du legion d'honneur' onto heroic types.
